Jamie's Central and South American Adventures
Jamie called Friday afternoon to check in and give an update - The internet café in town was down so she couldn't make the entry herself. She asked me to make an entry in her journal to let you all know that she is safe and sound.
Her news...spending a lot of time watching the howler monkeys, has roughly sixteen hours of watching them pretty much just eat and sleep. Of course you know Jamie, "bird girl", its not to tough for her to sit and observe when she has so much else going on around her. Something cool though...she watched, what she thought was another howler monkey approach an adult female with her baby. Mom was not impressed with the approach and quickly moved off. Giving a closer look it turned out to be a spider monkey which apparently was rare for the area she was monitoring. At dinner she shared her find with the primatologists in the group who where in disbelief until she produced her camera with the picture proof. She said they were just a little ticked that they missed the cool spider monkey. Leave it to Jamie to have the patience and stamina to sit and observe long enough to get to see something really cool.
Jamie is looking forward to having her laundry done for her when she gets to San Jose. Doing all of her laundry by hand and the humidity is so high that nothing dries. From the sounds of it I am not sure she is going to want to bring her field cloths home.
Jamie most likely won't be able to post again until the 13th when she gets into San Jose and the class is over. She is having an awesome time...Seeing many cool birds, insects and plants and enjoying the company. After long days of class and observation they have had a few nights where they stay up, talk, have a margarita. But it sounds like most nights the researchers just fall into bed to get ready for the next day. - Jamie's Mom
