after a fast ferry from santorini a couple of hours later we were in naxos. naxos is the biggest of the cyclade islands and the guide book said it is one of the islands that could survive without tourism. we got picked up by the hotel at the ferry, then we decided to wonder around naxos town, the town is not a picturesque as santorini, but has a huge amount of character. but naxos does had sandy beaches!!! the first i have seen in europe and miles of them, we took a bus to the plaka beach and i couldn't resist taking off my shoes and walking along the beach, it was great. there were heaps on families on the beach and a part of it was nudist, mei ling and i had a bit of a giggle amongst outselves.
as we only had one full day in naxos before a night ferry to pireus in athens, we decided to hire two quad bikes, which you can hire with your car license, it was fantastic. although within five minutes of picking up the quad bikes, we saw a girl on a quad bike in front of us drive up the back of a car, i think she hit the accelerator instead of the break. she was alright, but upset. that was a bit upsetting to see, so i was very cautious in the town. however on the roads out of town it was great, travelled at about 40kmph and was able to have a good look around. the interior of the island is quite hilly and scenic. we stopped at a few villages along the way for lunch. all up we did about 100km. there was hardly any traffic, which made is a bit easier, as it was the first time i had driven on the left hand side! that night we found a restaurant along the beach and had a nice meal, then i went for a swim, to get the dust off from the bike ride.
that night we got on a ferry back to athens. mei ling's flight we at midday, so she went straight to the airport as my flight was not until 7pm, so i walked around athens for the day then went to the airport. greece was fantastic, although every hotel had something wrong with their showers! it became a bit of an in joke with mei ing and i.
