We stopped off the coast of Singapore today to bunker for fuel... or "petrol" as they say overseas. This process usually takes a few hours depending on how much we fuel up, so we had a chance to look out and see a bit of the skyline and surrounding islands.
Today, Friday the 13th of March was the HALF WAY POINT of our voyage in terms of days. Fifty four days passed, and fifty more days to go. Many of the 800 voyagers have sentiments of sadness upon hearing that news, myself included. I believe this is a good sign that people are truly enjoying and valuing this experience.
I do my best to not lose sight of how unique semester at sea is on so many levels. Circumnavigating the world on a ship, visiting 12 countries, creating a floating student life program, a floating church, and a community of 1000 people that is feeling more and more like family. There is a lot of discussion and people trying to mentally prepare for "re-entry" to the U.S. and perhaps more importantly life off of this ship. Some alum have commented that much of the withdrawl is around the social component and the shipboard community.
You know how you work a job, or are in school and years of your life just zoom by? Many of the years that I have lived, don't have memories that necessarily stand out. I have realized that these four months may establish 2009 as one of the best years of my life...certainly most memorable. When in my lifetime will I do something that rivals this experience? Again, it's unique on so many levels.
