From one sweltering town to another, we headed straight to Taganga, a small fishing town on the north coast. A quaint little town bordering one of the most beautiful national parks we've ever seen, the Tayrona National Park.
We spent a couple of days in Taganga, soaking up the sun on the beach and drunkenly practicing our Salsa moves (tucked in a corner of the bar!).
After a few days we were gagging to go to the national park and see it with our own eyes…we'd seen some incredible pictures on our travels but once there it was more beautiful than we'd imagined…white sandy beaches, beautiful clear sea, small, calm bays to swim and all this with a backdrop of mountains covered in lush green cloud forest.
The charm of the park was the fact that everything was basic, from the food to the accommodation. We spent 2 nights boiling alive in a tent that must have reached 100 degrees in the morning when the sun rose! After 3 days of self indulgence and an intense amount of time doing absolutely nothing, it was time to leave. Back in Taganga we booked a refresher diving course. Having completed our PADI Open Water three years ago and having only dived in a pond in Peterborough, we were itching to actually see something more than a sunken double decker bus and some Carp! An hour in the pool for a refresher and we were out in the middle of the ocean, both relatively nervous and excited. Although we didn't see any turtles or sharks, we did spot a few seahorses, swam through shoals of beautiful fish and 'stroked' a puffer fish! Just being underwater and witnessing this different world was a wonderful experience and has certainly refreshed our taste for diving.
A week on the coast was all we could afford as we had to make our way back to Bogota for our return flight out of Colombia. Before hitting Bogota (for the 4th time), we'd saved 4 days to spend some time in San Gil, the self-appointed adventure capital of the country.
From such a short stay we have some wonderful experiences from our time in San Gil…one was paragliding over the valleys. It was such an amazing feeling, soaring like a bird with Eagles gliding next to you and a birds-eye view of the landscape below. Another favourite was caving. Metres below ground level, we skidded and slided through mountains of mud, swam through sink holes and squeezed our bodies through sandwiches of rock...a great challenge and well worth it when we reached the crystal cave, 1000's of glittering stalactites in a blacker than black cavern, incredible.
Our 6 weeks in Colombia has come to an end. It has been one of the most incredible countires we've travelled ... the people are the friendliest we've encountered and the whole experience has been exciting and unforgettable. We definitely hope to return one day in the not-too-distant future ...
