Dear Kate and Martin
Thank you for buying us the Queenstown luge for our wedding present. It was the most fun thing we did in Queenstown.
So as you can probably guess from that opening paragraph we made it down to Queenstown near the south of the South Island, an epic journey from where we started up in Waipara covering two days of driving. There was lots to see on the way, all the normal beautiful scenery, plus many of the normal tourist attractions.
For example, Kaikoura: 'Shall we stop there?' 'Is there a crazy golf course?' 'No, just some whales.' 'Let's not bother'.
Christchurch: 'Shall we stop there?' 'What's there?' 'Lots of miserable people still moping about an earthquake that happened five years ago and a crazy golf course.' 'Let's stop at the crazy golf course and avoid the mopy people.'
Tekapo: 'Is that a place or some advice?' 'Both.' 'Well I did eat some dodgy Chinese earlier so I do need the toilet.'
Twizel: 'Crazy golf?' 'Yup' 'Sorted'
So after a crazy golf tour down the South Island, we arrived in Queenstown famous for having not one but two crazy golf courses, one of which almost caused a divorce but we need not go into that..only to say it was a rubbish course and stupid and I lost because it was a stupid and rubbish course and nothing else.
Queenstown is also famous for its adventure sports like bungee jumping, sky diving and canyon swings. None of which we did. Not because we were scared, of course, but just because...you know...we were too busy doing other things.
Queenstown's other attraction is its nightlife. Our night out in Queenstown was slightly hampered by the fact that we accidently went out with a lot of nineteen year olds. Personally, I have nothing against young people but when your night consists of
'I can't believe you are that old'
and
'So is this your first marriage?'
we decided to make our escape and go and talk to the ducks instead.
So anyway, the luge. For those who don't know what a luge is, it is like a sledge with wheels and a steering wheel. At the top of a big hill, they have built a downhill racing track so you drive along trying to beat your wife to prove you are a bigger man than she is and to make up for the fact that she beat you in that crazy golf that we are not talking about. It is surprisingly difficult and easy to fall off and hurt yourself, especially when it is raining and the track is wet and slippery.
To get to luge track, you have to get a cable car up the mountain. Queenstown is one of the prettiest places in the world, set on a beautiful lake, surrounded by towering mountain ranges so the cable car itself is stunning, especially when the weather is a bit dodgy, as the clouds roll in obscuring everything and then lift and seem to settle on top of the hills so they have little furry hats. You could sit in the bar next to the luge track watching the scenery for hours as every moment, the view is different, which is why we might have been a bit tipsy by the time we got out on the track which definitely added to the excitement.
Lots of love
Jim and Donna
INTERESTING KIWI FACT OF THE DAY
Due to the high cost of living and the touristy nature of the place, Queenstown has the lowest percentage of New Zealanders living there compared to any other town in New Zealand. One estimate claims that only 10% of Queenstown residents are originally from New Zealand. Consequently, Queenstown has the highest standard of driving in the entire country.

Aaron The highest standard of driving in the entire country. ... interesting.
Jim No offence but there are not enough cars on the road out here so kiwi drivers are not good at dealing with other cars on the road
