G'day!
I just started my second week of uni(college in Aussie terms), and all is going smoothly. We only had lectures last week, so this week will be a little bit more hectic. I somehow pulled off a pretty good schedule. Monday's I only have class at 7 pm, tuesdays and wednesdays are pretty packed, and Thursday I am done at 9 am, which is also the start to my long weekend! I am taking this Australian society and culture class specifically for international students, and it is by far my favorite class. Last week we learned about the beach for two hours! The class consists of mostly Germans and Americans with a few Asians and Scandanavians. Enough about classes...Brisbane seems to amaze me more and more each day I am here. This weekend was filled with special events going on all over the city. We went to a flea market Saturday morning close to our apartment. My roommates couldn't believe how excited I was for all the fresh fruits and veges, and the many kinds of jewelry. It's so fun, you get to bargain for things. Even though everything has a listed price, the people are totally willing to negotiate. I managed to get a really nice silver and turquoise bracelet, a ring with an opal stone, and two toe rings for $20-quite a bargain! Later on, we walked up to the city to a street party where we got introduced to several local bands. We ended up at this festival called dancing in the street. About five blocks were closed off to showcase live performances of every single kind of dance you could imagine. My favorite part was the workshops where we could learn certain routines of a dance genre. It's funny, during orientation, all they seemed to talk about was culture shock, and how it usually affects everyone in someway sometime. I have not had one ounce of that yet, and I sit here wondering how it is even possible. I love this place! Cheers!
