Omaha, Nebraska
This should be amusing. I do like the set up of this app. It will be nice to use especially when I actually do go somewhere or do something outside of my normal daily life. As of right now however I am just enjoying the quiet blandness of a Sunday afternoon. After sleeping until 1 pm (give me a break, I was up for 19 hours straight) there isn't even the tiniest bit of desire in me to leave my apartment. Why was I up for 19 hours? No exciting reason. Just that I spent a leisurely Saturday running various errands and sight seeing with my hubby and then had to go to work on an overnight shift. I'm feeling very dull today because I am tired and spent from the adrenaline rush earlier in the day. Let's be honest, I am being a recluse because the weather is pissing me off. It's hot and humid. The kind of humid that makes it feel like someone threw a hot, wet blanket on you the second you step outside. The kind of humid that makes you feel like you're sticky all over and when you try to take a deep breath you feel like you're drowning. For those familiar with Nebraska this is the summer norm. For those who are not, we've been going through a cycle of hot and humid weather during the day and tornado producing thunderstorms all night. That is exactly what I spent all of last night watching for and running from! I work security and this particular shift had me patrolling a site on foot and by car. Half of the night was spent relatively quiet, with the occasional rain shower and mild thunderstorm. So, boring right? At about 3 in the morning I'm just sitting there, minding my own business, and out of no where a giant "wall" of wind and rain hits the car! It hits the car so hard that I'm rocking on my shocks. Needless to say that's not good! I turn on the weather radio to hear that particularly nerve grating, hair raising warning tone followed by the NWS guy advising my exact area to seek shelter immediatlely because there is a tornado. I didn't really need the weather radio to tell me that. I knew as soon as the wall of wind hit me and I saw a large heavy trash can go sailing down the road like it was a plastic shopping bag that it was bad news. The only thing I didn't know was how close the ultimate cause of such extreme weather was and how much time I had to get to shelter. This was confirmed in double with a phone call from Alex telling me there was rotation in the clouds all over right where I was working and I had to go to the gas station NOW! I couldn't see in front of my nose the rain was so hard and it was blowing sideways. That was the fastest, most disconcerting trip to a gas station that I have ever taken. Everything turned out ok, obviously. I wouldn't be on here blabbing about it otherwise. Me and a few other people road out the worst of it at the gas station and once it had passed, and NWS radio advised that it was safe to leave shelter, we all went on our merry way. Let me tell you though, there's nothing like riding out a tornado producing storm with a group of nervous strangers! Funny how people follow a uniform when they see one.
