A Second Home in Porto, Portugal
Porto, Portugal
Guest House Douro is everything you could possible want in a place to stay in any city, let alone in the charming and picturesque city of Porto. The location is fantastic, the rooms are comfortable, the breakfast is great and the hosts - Carmen and Joao - are amazingly welcoming, helpful and generous.
My wife and I started in Porto on our Babymoon early in the morning. We were welcomed with fresh orange juice and a friendly smile from Joao. After going over the details of Guest House Douro (GHD), Joao opened up the map of Porto and pointed out all of the places we must see, should see and even what we should skip. He made dinner reservations and a nearby fish restaurant - “A Grade” - and, when we came back in the afternoon for a quick nap, we were greeted by he and Carmen with a glass of port for me and a cup of tea for my wife. They were extremely nice to my pregnant wife and went out of their way to make her very comfortable. They made us feel more like part of their family than clients at their business.
Breakfasts were meticulously prepared with fresh fruit, rolls, fresh cut meats and cheeses, with great coffee and tea. As you read this and read fresh fruit, you may picture a fruit salad or melon chunks or something like that. This was a large tropical fruit spread of bananas, kiwi, papaya, mango, and several other fruits - fresher than imaginable.
All of the meal reservations were spot on between lunch at “Taberna San Pedro” to dinner at “Jimao” and “A Grade”. They also recommended and made reservations at Graham’s Port House which was very special and generous, and something we will remember forever.
When we return to Porto (yes we will be back), we will definitely stay at Guest House Douro again...I don’t think Carmen and Joao would allow anything else.
