Just got back last night from the Galápagos Islands and wow what an amazing time I had. I was there for a total of three nights. Our tour kicked off from a hotel in Quito and we all had to get up at 4 am to get our flight to the Galapagos. I had a very difficult time getting up that early and let's just say yep I felt like a bag of s*** . Our first day of arrival we landed in the island of Baltra . We met our guide and took a ferry to the island of Santa Cruz where we went to a tortoise farm. I learnt that the difference between turtles and tortoises is that turtles are the marine ones and tortoises are on land . The tortoises were bloody huge. So awesome to see them . Even got the pleasure of watching two of the mate . I felt sorry for the female she looked like she wasn't enjoying herself at all. Unfortunately she couldn't tap out the poor thing.
I got to also try some local Galapagos coffee which was a bit of a let down . Hate to say it but Aussie coffee is still the best coffee I have ever had . I haven't been to Europe yet though so I'll let you know of this changes when I arrive there in March. Afterwards we got to board our boat . Not too shabby at all . I roomed with a New Zealand girl while on tour and found out she is doing the same tour from Lima to Rio . Must say she was an awesome roommate . I more felt sorry for her because she had to put up with my continuous singing and dancing . Oh and my usual messy self with all my s*** thrown all over the room .
We had a good mixture of people on the boat . Americans , Canadians, Europeans etc . And mixture of ages as well including an old British guy that ended up annoying the s*** out of me by the end of the trip. I think he thought quite highly of himself parading around in a rainbow speedo and saying he was a diplomat. I don't even know what the heck a diplomat does and I'm not in hurry to find out after meeting buddy on our trip. Anyways enough of being a Debbie downer the tour group overall were great . For four nights we got to visit a few Islands we visited island Genovesa , Santa Fe and San Cristobal. We did a mixture of walks / guides on land and snorkelling . Every place we went was different so it is hard for me to say which one is my favourite island. The sea Lions were on every island and let me tell you they never got old. I love sea lions and if I could have packed one in my backpack and took it home i would for sure. I finally found out what a boobie is .. I'd heard of them before but didn't realise they were a Galapagos bird . I pictured them to be some sort of sloth or something.
The other thing I thought was cool about the Galapagos was the cactuses there. Our guide explained these guys are the prime example of evolution . Some islands we went to the cactuses that were only a bushes . Others had actually evolved overtime to develop a trunk . The main reason they develop a trunk is to prevent both tortoises or iguanas from eating them . Survival of the fittest right there.
The last day we did a morning snorkel near an island rock called kicker rock it's located just off island Isabel . The snorkelling here was amazing here . We saw turtles , hammer head sharks, Galapagos sharks , heaps of colourful fish and a bunch of rays. Overall I had such a good time in the Galapagos - the crew and tour guide were great and the food was really good . I think I'll go back again another time and see some of the other islands it was worth. Every penny I spent that's for sure and I'd highly recommend anyone coming to Ecuador to do a Galapagos tour . I can actually say it s***s on the amazon and you'll definitely see more animals / wild life there .
