I'm finally in Brazil!! Took an overnight train and then waited four hours at the border of Bolivia / brazil to finally get through. I was so tired and irritated after that u didn't want to talk to me that day . After the border crossing we got straight on a bus for four hours to the middle of the Pantanal . It's basically a big wetland jungle area where a lot of wildlife can be seen . The first day we did some walking to view some wildlife . We got to see close up some howler monkeys which was awesome . When I was at the amazon we could only see them from far . The accommodation was interesting . We got to sleep in hammocks . I thought I wouldn't like sleeping in them but I guess I must have been pretty tired because I slept so well. The next morning we got to do some horse riding . Now I've always thought I didn't like horse riding but I kinda had a lot of fun . I've only been one other time in my life and that was year 7 camp . I got scared a little because I saw one of my fellow classmates get kicked by a horse and his knee split open and had to go to hospital .
That afternoon we went fishing for piranhas in the nearby river . It was a bit crazy fishing so close to a river full of kaymans ( there equivalent of alligators here ) . There were heaps and they kept eating all my bait so I didn't catch any. Someone from the tour kept getting his hook caught on a kayman . Felt sorry for the b***** but serves them right for taking our bait . We moved to another river to see if we could have more luck but this river only had trout. All of us in total caught about 14 trouts .. Except me I didn't catch a thing . I'm taking that as a sign that me and fishing do not go well together and I may never fish again in my life .
Overall the Pantanal was neither a let down or a highlight . I didn't hate it , I didn't love it . Saying that I would easily skip that on the itinerary if I could go back in time ..
The next morning it was time to pack our things and get on a bus to Bonito. Now our bus driver ( similar driving to the bloke who picked us up from the Bolivia / Brazil border ) was not a good driver. I could see that straight of the bat. We were still driving along the dirt roads of the Pantanal when suddenly a truck approaches us ..instead of slowing down our bus driver decides to swerve at speed on this muddy dirt road . Of course we skidded and ended up stuck in a ditch . He tried getting the bus out but failed. We had to call for help. It wouldn't have been so bad if we weren't stuck in mosquito land. We all got bitten to death .. Some worse then others.
Finally we got the bus going again after about an hour . We arrived in Bonito in the afternoon and just settled into our hostel. Bonito is a small town close to some rivers that have crystal blue waters . People come here to snorkel, hike , raft etc. it's expensive so I don't think many backpackers usually make this part of their trip. Tomorrow I am going snorkelling in the river . Apparently it's the thing to do and it's really beautiful . It cost me a bit but I enjoy snorkelling so I'm all signed up .
I can already tell how much expensive Brazil is compared to everywhere else I've been in South America . Food now is at a near normal price at what we pay back home ... Well except if u buy hamburgers at every restaurant you go to . I've had purchased two meals in one day that have just been hamburgers and I've probably saved . Not sure if it'll save my waistline though so I'm going to have to start ordering other food again shortly...
