New York
The easiest way to describe our New York trip thus far is to split it up into days because we have been very busy due to our awesome New York Passes.
Day1 we managed to catch the 2hr bus from Tom's River to New York and arrived around 12:30 then purchased subway passess and made our way to our accommodation at Brooklyn. We then jumped straight back onto the train to go to Times square and pick up our 7day New York Passes that Mitch and Lisa gave us as a present last year. The way they work is that we are able to complete as many of the activities as we can for free within the 7 day period. We were too excited to be in New York so we started straight away and went to the Wax museum and the Empire state building which were great as well as exploring around times Square.
By day 2 we had mastered the Subway system and were able to navigate our way to Battery Park to catch the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Jesse wasn't thrilled but for the afternoon I managed to drag him along to a 3 hour Sex in the city tour which I loved and we had cupcakes from Magnolia bakery and saw many places around the city where they had filmed the show.
Day 3 was hectic, of course we wanted to fit as much in as we could so we woke up early and went to a bagel shop near the subway we and I ordered a sun-dried tomato bagel and Jesse ordered a chicken and salad bagel and we expected that they would come like sandwhiches with everything on it but they actually mix the ingredients up with philly cheese so we were a little surprised but we ended up loving them and can see why Americans are so crazy about them. We then caught the subway to Grand Central station and did an audio tour which was pretty standard with a few interesting facts. We then walked to Rockerfella Centre which is massive and amazing and we did a tour of that with a guide that was very interesting and we ended up loving the tour which surprised me because I thought it was going to be boring and then he let us skip the lines and go straight to 'the top of the Rock' which usually has at least a 1hr line up and we took some photos of New York from the 76th floor. The day we were there was also the last day the Ice Rink was running before they closed it down so perfect timing again. We then did a 'Radio City' tour because we were right near it and were again surprised at how interesting the history etc was. After many hours of walking tours we went to Central Park and hired bikes for 2.5hrs and rode the whole way around Central park stopping to watch a baseball game half way. We then did a NBC tour which we were super excited about but it was a bit of a let down. After having dinner and catching the subway home it was 10:30pm so we had a massive day. We are lucky that we are using these passes because the activities we thought we would like haven't been that great and we have ended up loving some of the ones we would have never chosen.
Day 4 we did a 2 hour walking tour through Central Park to see the Movie and T.V hotspots which was very interesting and Central Park is amazing. We then had lunch and headed to the Museum of Natural History which took us a lot longer to get through than we thought so we were impressed with that. I have a fiend who now lives in Manhattan and he works at a Mexican Bar down on 20th St so he invited us there and we had dinner and several drinks and he didn't charge us for half of it so that was very nice of him. We also met a few of his friends who came to the bar and his wife who is lovely. We headed home about 10:30pm though because we were too scared to catch the subway any later. Overall it was a very long but satisfyig day that we really enjoyed.
Day 5 we again got up early and caught the subway to Chambers St to meet for a 2hour walking tour over the Brooklyn bridge and through the DUMBO (Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass) area which was fantastic and the history was very interesting. We then made out way to our 2 hour uptown Manhattan movie and T.V hotspots tour where we met an Aussie boy who was from Sydney and was a Cemistry teacher as well so he was interesting. Stu was away for the night so offered us his apartment which is very lovely and we have really enjoyed spending a night in Manhattan rather than having to get the Subway home.
Our first 5 days have been packed with activities and we have had very sore legs and feet and were often tired so it will be good having the second week to relax a little and see any areas of NY that we haven't made the most of yet. We have met many new people and they have all been soo lovely which has been suprising. We really have enjoyed New York so far and hopefully the next week is just as good.
