Hi!
Well I've done the Inca Trail! We started on New ear's Eve and we arrived at Machu Picchu on the 3rd. It lived up to all expectations... it's rainy season so we had a bit of rain during the hike and at nights but not too bad. It was really cloudy and rained the whole time we were actually at Machu Picchu but it was still amazing.
Much more deluxe than I thought it would be too - we had 18 porters for the 11 of us plus 2 guides. They carried all the tents and equipment etc and we just had to carry our things for the day in a day pack. When we arrived at camp in the afternoons we got hot water delivered to our tents to soak our feet and our tents were all set up for us. And we had the most amazing food too! Pancakes and quinoa porridge for breakfast, 3 course dinners, afternoon tea with cheese pastries and popcorn and so many other nice things.
The hike itself wasn't as bad as I expected - the second day was pretty tough but we got to camp at lunch time so we could relax in the afternoon. Lots of it was downhill as well which I wasn't expected but it was harder on your body going downhill on all the steps. The third day was really beautiful as we walked through the cloud forest and jungle and it had been raining so everythin looked really dewy and fresh. On the fourth and last day we had to get up at 4am to arrive at Machu Picchu in the morning so that was pretty hard going but worth it. After walking around and getting the guided tour from Miguel our guide we got the bus down the hill to Aguas Calientes, which is the town before Machu Picchu where we had lunch and went to the hot springs there.
We arrived back to Cusco in the evening and have had 2 nights here now. Last night we all went out dancing and drinking so I'm feeing the effects today. Slightly crazy night, where John, a guy on the group accidentally pulled me onto the floor and a would-be rescuer poured beer all over me as he tried to help me up! This afternoon we fly to Arequipa where we go to the Colca Canyon to try and spot some Condors.
Sorry for the brevity - there's so much more to say butit's impossible to tell it all now in full detail,
check out the cloudy photos of Machu Picchu!
