Jane and Ali's USA tour!
Hi everyone, here's the 2nd journal installment!!
Okay so we travelled by the famous greyhound bus from san fran to LA on sunday...it was an 8 hour drive! The bus driver was hard as nails and only stopped once for 15 mins but the journey wasn't actually that bad. They did however drop us off in the middle of nowhere and we got ripped off by the taxi man *fuff* but arrived at the hostel in santa monica safe and sound. We are sharing with 6 other girls, two are british :) YAY and actually get our humour!!hee hee. We are staying right in the centre of santa monica, right near the beach :) the weather is so much hotter than san fran which is good 'cos i was beggining to wish i'd bought jeans and jumpers! Our first day was spent wandering the famous 3rd street promenade with all the cinemas, coffee shops and designer stores (even tho we can't afford to buy clothes!).....then tanned ourself at the beach....which is where we had a very surreal experience! A transvestite wandered over and randomly started talking to us about cross-gender and gay culture/scene in england!! This was a bit weird seen as tho we know very little about either but nether the less we chatted to him (who told us was brad/tammy) for quite a while until the lifeguard came and told him to move on, informing us that they actually get a lot of complaints about him year after year. He was harmless though so we felt quite bad that the lifeguard humiliated him!
The city is really relaxed and is completely different to san fran, there are a lot of superficial people about who obviously care a lot about how they look when me and ali can't really give a damn (as you'll see on the photo's!). There's a nice english restaurant/pub right around the corner where we went for good old english beans on toast for tea (ali had a major craving for it!!); american food is really stodgey and filling, which is not what you want in the hot weather!
Since we've been here we've seen two movies; the break-up and pirates of the caribean 2....the city is mad for movies....we've seen 6 cinemas on the same street! We went to see the latter with our 2 english room mates Jess and Verity (sisters from birmingham). Going to the cinemas in america is really weird, especially when the americans clap at every joke or good scene in a movie!! What is with that?!
We done the whole LA city tour, movie star homes and Universal studios today; hollywood boulevard was really good, especially since the red carpet was out for tonights sports awards. We walked down Rodeo drive and i went in tiffany;s just for you mam :) I took a picture of the fabulous (not priced!) gems in the window for you too...didn't dare go inside though! We also went into the Regent Beverly Wilshire to use the toilets :) you know from the film pretty woman!
It's all a bit surreal in bel air and beverly hills because they seem to make their own laws and live a completely different life as you would expect...it's all a bit too material though! The hollywood sign was good, even though we couldn't get that close to it *fuff*.
Tomor we are going to rent a couple of bikes (Ali daren't get a tandem 'cos im so rubbish on a bike hee hee) and ride about 10 miles down the beach to malibu to see where the stars live :) we are in desperate need of some exercise too! then we are gonna top up our tans until we move on to Vegas baby :) 'cos that's just gonna be a week of sleeping during the day and partying at night....it is free drinks in all the casinos after all :) hee hee and boy are we gonna exploit that!
Anyways, love you all x x x jane and ali x x x
Photo's will follow, we promise!
p.s. This is to Sinead and Elizabeth **waves** we miss you and hope that you both have a great holiday! Its not quite the same sharing with 6 other girls and sharing a shower room with about 200!!!!!
