Amazon was great. They were having bizarre weather and so instead of 35 degrees, it was actually a lot colder than we were expecting, which was good because it kept the mosquitos away! Unfortunately though, the eco-lodges we were staying in had no windows, only mosquito nets, apparently to let us get "closer to nature". Jane and I got a little too close when on the first night we found a huge spider. A little girly charm and the guy came and removed it for us!
That first evening we went on a night walk, which was a bit scary at first because you had no idea what was creeping up behind you! We saw lots of spiders and general bugs, as well as a brown and white snake. Earlier in the day we had seen some monkeys, and lots of red and green macaws.
After not such a great sleep due to the spider incident, we spent the day getting on and off boats to do some treking through the jungle. During one of these treks we saw a huge tarantula, which was not nice, and also went Piranha fishing. In the evening we went searching for Caiman's in the boat, and saw several, including a baby one. It was handy that as soon as they felt the spotlight on them, they would completely freeze up, and so we were able to get some good photos.
Unfortunately the next day we had to leave early in the morning and catch our flight back to Lima. As it was the last night of our tour and most people were leaving the next day, we went to a posh restaurant sticking out into the sea called La Rosa Nautica. We were loving the bread man, but not loving the woman who followed you about in the ladies toilets expecting to be paid for turning the tap on for you!
Back in Lima, there were just a few of us left, and we decided to go paragliding. It was scary having to run off the cliff, but once you were up it was really good fun. Unfortunately we "ran out of air" and had to make a landing on the beach because we couldn't get high enough to land back on the cliff! We also spent some time in Central Lima, which turned out to be pretty sketchy, and went to a couple of museums. By now we've pretty much seen all of Lima and so I won't be sorry to get on the plane tonight for New Zealand.....!
