ok so im cheating and im not in BA and it is in fact the 8th not the 1st, but i have fallen a bit behind!!
after an amzing time at the iguazu falls (which unfortunately finished with me being very ill!!), we all headed off to Salto in Uruguay. had to take another loooong night bus to get there. however all was cancelled out by the thermal baths that Salto is famous for! a couple of the girls and i went and had a relaxing soak (was sooo nice feels like forever since i had a bath). Was still quite ill so that was all i really did in Salto as the next day we headed to the capital Montevideo.
when we arrived it was nice, if not a bit cold, to be there. we arrived mid afternoon so just spent the rest of the day wandering around the colonial part of the city. the next day we went down to Punta del este (a river beach), it took about 45 minutes to walk there and we got to take in the city which is really nice, very quiet. on the way back we found a big open air market and did a spot of shopping!!
had to be up early the next day to head to colonia, which is a little colonial town on the coast. it was very foggy when we arrived and that added to the charm, its a really beautiful little town. when we arrived we went out for lunch at a street cafe, and tried mate (its a green tea like concoction that everyone in uruguay and argentine drinks, they carry a mate cup filled with tea leaves and a flask about!! i even saw hot water stations in toilets for them!!), i could have rented a golf cart to explore but dont have my drivers license with me :(
the next day off to buenos aires!! we got a boat there first thing so had arrived and settled in by midday. the minute we got there i knew i would like it! in the afternoon we went to a cemetary, where the mausoleum of eva peron is. the graves there were so beautiful! that night we went to go and see a tango show which was amazing and very theatrical!! i never thought id be able to watch dancing for 3 and a half hours but it was great! we all then went on to a bar (believe it or not, despite it being BA, our options for going out were limited!!), which was a bit rubbish but once we'd had a few drinks and danced we ended up staying til about 4 in the morning....! the next day we just spent exploring the city, via the subway and foot until the hangover kicked in and we came back to hotel for a sleep before the groups farewell dinner!! we went to an all you can eat carvery place, it was delicious!! the argentines certainly can do meat (ok so im 'veggie' but every now and then its part of the cultural experience, who would go to argentina and not try a steak!!?), and we all then went out to a bar where there was a live band playing. in the morning i took a wander to the district of san telmo and sat, drank coffee and watched the world go by. that night after saying goodbye to eveyone, those of us that were left went out for a thai meal and then out dancing again (im yet to catch up on all the missed sleep!!). i had to leave around 4pm the next day so i got a chance to go the plaza de mayo to watch the unions and the mothers of the plaza de mayo march (since the dirty war the mothers of some who just 'disapeared' have marched in rememberance and for justice), im so lucky that i got the chance to see the march, it was very moving and humbling. had wanted to go to the human rights museum but unfortunately did not get a chance and it was closed that morning. maybe next time!!
so then said a sad goodbye to the rest that were left (esp tess and eilidh :(!) and was off to the airport.......!!
