After getting out of sleepy town we drove a good few hundred Km's to the Abel Tasman National Park. We stayed in a small town called Marahau, which literally only had 1 shop, 1 restaurant, 1 burger van, 1 kayak shop & a campsite!
The Abel Tasman is all about adventure, so we decided to hire Kayaks, and see the park from the water.... After a quick briefing we were paddling out to sea..... Just before we got to our Kayaks we found a starfish on the sand. Luke prodded it with his shoe - I picked it up on my thong, and put it in the sea ( I saved its life!) So maybe I may start having good luck now...
Anyway we got into a rhythm paddling with our paddles, then realised we hadnt moved very far!! We started out in the cove, we had two islands infront of us, a small one to the right, and a larger one to the left, we decided to head to this one. But after about 40 minutes of paddling we were tired, and felt like we hadnt moved an instant.... We pulled into a little cove (on the mainland) - and not the original beach, i might add!! So we gathered our energy, had a drink and a snack. Then hit the open sea!
God knows how long it took, but we made it! We arrived to a little sandpit in the sea which was called 'Adele Island' it was a little arm which came out from the beach, so we rested for only a couple of minutes before the tide came in!! Typical!! So we moved onto the beach, and up on the higher part, stayed here and sunbathed for an hour or two then decided to brave it home!
It was a beautiful day on the water, we were both tired from it, and I am proud to say, that I outrode Luke!!! He took plenty of breaks from paddling and steering the canoe!!! But without him, I would be residing on Adele Island, I would never have made it back on my own!! And obviously, vice versa too!!!
The guy in the Kayak shop asked what we were doing for dinner, and suggested an 'amazing' burger place just up the road.... we went!
Yes it was amazing!! It was just a little caravan converted to a burger van just out of town, but the burgers were fantastic! And maybe BETTER than a Fergburger, dare I say it!!! I had a lamb burger, and Luke had a beef burger, with EVERYTHING you can imagine inside, from an egg, to beetroot, to nuts!!
They were too good to leave any to waste!
Its safe to say we went to bed early, and had a looong nights sleep!
