Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage city which was worlds apart from the likes of Vang Vieng. We spent 3 very relaxing nights here. The city is lined with wats (temples) and the monks wander the streets in their bright orange clothes. The city was heaving with tourists as it is supposedly the most photogenic city in the whole of south east Asia. Although this was true the city was beautiful we were there for the food. With a huge French influence there were crepes galore. As Laos is not famous for it's cuisine- it's sort of a bizare mix of Vietnamese, Thai, and Indian (therefore rice, rice, rice, noodles, rice and cabbage) I jumped for joy everytime I found something remotely Western.
We decided that it was time to do an activity that did not involve being on a geography field trip, so we signed up for whiite water rafting and It was a really good day. As we are in wet season the river was high and the rapids strong, possibly too strong for some as Marky was tipped out. He claimed that he fell out deliberately to prevent the raft from toppling over hmmmmmmmmm! It was here that we decided that we should make the trek to southern Laos as it is a little more of the tourist path. The decision was one that was not made lightly as it meant returing to Vientiane and then an overnight trip to Pakse, this would all be done by bus as there is simply no other means of travel in Laos,(except for Laos airlines but since they don't want to disclose their safety record, we thought against it!) So the following day we travelled the 10 hours back to Vientiane and then borded a night bus for a further 10 hour journey to Pakse. The night bus was surprisingly better than that in Vietnam, rather than have individual bunks they were doubles which was fine if you knew someone but fairly awkward if you didn't.
