Waitomo - Taupo
Wednesday 30th December
We spent the morning watching 'The Lion King', jumping on a trampoline and eating pasta. We were picked up at 1.30pm (meant to be 1pm and had to phone magic office to check they hadn't left us behind) and driven to Taupo. Before we were dropped off at Urban Retreat Hostel we stopped off at Huka falls which has 220,000 litres of water flowing over every second. At the hostel we moved into our 6 bed dorm. The hostel was ok even if the room was a bit cramped. We went to woolies to do our food shop and a quick look around the town. Homes and Lyndsey decided they would do the Alpine crossing the next day so we had an early night after our first pasta meal which was yummy.
Thursday 31st December
In the morning Homes and Lyndsey set off on their walk and after a lazy start Jen M, Alison and I set off to the hot springs along the river. The main pools where a little too hot but if you found the right spot were the hot stream and river merged it was really pleasant. After our dip we had our picnic lunch in the park before we walked along the lake shore back to the hostel. For dinner we all had the chilli meal apart from Jen that had the tinned curry (looked a little like dog food but tasted good). As it was New Years Eve we played drinking games at the hostels cheap bar before headed into the town along bar street. We ended up in the Irish bar as it was one of the only places without a door charge. While we were in the Bar some idiot set off a fire cracker in the middle of our table and we all had to jump out of the way so we didn't get hit. I made him come and apologise and then Lyndsey got him thrown out. At midnight we went outside to watch the fireworks and be some of the first people to welcome in the New Year. After watching fireworks in the cold we went and had a fun dance in a bar called Pitch before heading home and were in bed by 1.30am as we had to be up early to get the magic bus.
