So here we are back in london. Our magical year out ended some time ago now and we are ensconced back in our flat and gamefully employed earning the kind of sums that would make our scrimping last year seem ridiculous. however how did it all happen? what hapened when we left xalapa, how did we get home and how was christmas well here's what... and how and stuff....
we left xalapa by coach and arrived in to mexico about 5 in the evening, we were texting our mexican chums and hoping they remmebered what we looked like and were genuine in there offer of looking after us. well it turned out they were... in spades!
jennifer was immediately comandeered by the daughters in the family Ali and Fer whilst I and Ricardo carried the bags to the car. They drove us back to there little cafe/restaurant and gave us more exceptional food. why they aren't all the size of a house we couldn't work out but their cooking was exceptional and we ate and ate and ate, just about getting by in spanish we prattled on and were soon firm friends.
we drove back to their apartment which was very nice with cable TV and two crazy dogs called Baxter and Wendy. quite English names chosed by ricardo, we asked why and he just liked the names.... good shout, baxter is pronounced Backstair, to our amusement.
i can't remember exactly what we did each day we were there but on the saturday was ricardo's birthday so special food was planned down at the restaurant and a small party was arranged for family and close friends. Well the party was amazing. the foods was sensational, there was plenty of tequila / mescal and fortunately beer. it started about 2 ish and ended back in their flat about 4 in the morning, music still blaring, dogs barking, no neighbours complaining. one of Ricardo's friends spoke English having worked in the states for two years and we had a good chat with him about the state of mexico and how good various governments there have been. the dancing started early evening and Ale's grandfather , clad in beckhams real madrid kit took jennifers salsaing tuition in hand and soon had her whirling round the dance floor.
me and the grandmother took a more sedate and dare i say classier approach and sashayed smoothly around the floor, before heading back for more food and beer.
Sunday we were taken on the big sightseeing tour and did a spot of shopping for us and for friends and relatives as by now we were culling clothes and were pretty much left with just our travel clothes and empty ruck sacks.
Monday the parents had to work but the kids were allowed the day off school so with their aunty (who looooooved her food) we took another day exploring mexico city by tube. WE managed to blag our way into a diego rivera museum normally closed on mondays thanks to our mexican amigo's which was a real treat. he did a huge picture of all the famous people from Mexico including himself and frida, it's a great picture.
we bought a few sweeties as thanks for the family and before we knew it we were heading to teh airport 7 plus luggage in the car and being dropped off for check in back home. we just about managed to avoid the tearful goodbye having made Pinkies promise to visit again as soon as we could afford it and also offering to look after them should they visit London.
once we went through baggage control it was all over and suddenly we could really think about being home and cold and seeing all the poeple we had missed and boring them wiht all the things we'd done and , yes, eaten.
we landed not too exhausted, traversed London, surprised at understanding what everyone was saying on our carraige for a change (everyone seemed so loud and stupid!)
and that was the foreign part of our year off done.
