We arrived in Perth yesterday after the drive from Albany and got ourselves set up in a rather strange campsite a short drive north of the city centre. The cabin and caravan areas of the park seem to be very well maintained but the campers all seem to be sharing one large mud flat with the occasional blade of grass scattered about for good measure. There was little time to do anything by the time we had our home set up as the night drew in, so it was early to bed ahead of a busy day today.
This morning we headed off into the city for a drive around to seek the many hostels and internet cafes and anywhere else with a notice board so we could put up our posters of Fergal for sale. Our first stop was the port town of Fremantle just a few kilometres to the south of the city, where we stopped for a look around the town. After we had posted everywhere we could find we explored some of the side streets until we came to an area with a real bohemian vibe with pubs and cafes spilling out onto the street and a huge indoor market with hundreds of stalls selling essentially the same thing as the stall next to it.
From here we headed back into the city where there was a hostel on pretty much every corner and by the time we had finished canvassing them all, we had driven along almost every street in central Perth! We could probably carry out a pretty good sightseeing tour at this moment in time (as long as the only thing we would have to point out on the tour is where the nearest notice board is).
Our first impressions of the city were that it seemed a little like Brisbane, only with palm trees, ponds and lakes in place of the Queensland parklands, which gives the place a real holiday vibe. As with every city in the country, water plays an important part here and there is of course the obligatory river running around the outskirts, although this one seems to be seen by the locals as more of a lake than a river with yachts moored up and fantastic looking houses perched on an island just across the water. The weather has also picked up a lot today, which has probably helped shape our opinions, but we both really like Perth already and could stay here for very much longer than our visa's will allow!
