Today is our last day in Queenstown, having been here for nine days now, before we head south on the bottom bus. Since we have been here we have indulged ourselves a little in much frivolity and various forms of entertainment.
When we first arrived, we booked ourselves a snowboarding package for a week, that included a couple of lessons so that we could progress from falling on our asses on the beginner slopes. After the first couple of days we were improving quite steadily, but we still needed the Wednesday off to recover from our bumps and bruises, so it was time to explore the town.
We headed up the gondola to the top of the mountain overlooking Queenstown and the surrounding area. We had already been a little freaked out by the gondola restaurant at night as it appears as just lights in the sky as the mountain is blacked out. Thought it was a bloody spaceship or something the first time we saw it!!
From the top we could see all the surrounding mountains where the ski fields were, as well as the harbour, the gardens and the town itself. It was kind of odd though seeing literally hundreds of people paragliding down only about ten feet above our heads, and people hurtling around a luge track with only a small fence between them and a several hundred foot drop!
Once we were back down at a more reasonable height we headed to the best indoor crazy golf course ever!! The holes all had loads of intricate designs and mechanisms that you need to putt around. One hole you even had to putt your ball up the ramp where it got taken up by a chairlift and then ran along one of three different routes and either landed right next to the hole, or, more often than not, on the other side of the hole completely. We even got a chubba chub lolly at the end of the last 'candy factory' hole.
That night we went to Winnie Baggoes restaurant and bar for one of the best pizza's we have ever had. The restaurant itself was pretty cool too as the roof opens up when it gets too hot inside, but unfortunately for us there was no snow to come in.
After a couple more days snowboarding we were fairly confident with most of the green and blue runs so we spent today on the tube park and the terrain park. The tubing was brilliant - you just sit inside a huge rubber tube with a plastic bottom to it to make you go faster, and fly down a snow slide complete with jumps. Then it was onto the terrain park! Jumping off ramps and sliding along rails seems a little unnatural with essentially a plank of wood strapped to your feet, but we gave it a go none the less. By the end of the day we were jumping (albeit not too high) and sliding ok, but landing at the end of it was proving an issue!
Although we are sad to be leaving Queenstown, our bodies could probably do with a break after the consistent battering of today's activities.
No trip to Queenstown would be complete without a visit to the famous Fergburger so tonight we has one of the biggest burgers ever made and we plan to spend the next few days digesting the damn thing!!
We leave nice and early tomorrow morning to make our way down to Dunedin, home to Speights brewery and the holy Cadbury factory.
