We left Nelson's Bay on Wednesday and after driving for more hours than we care to remember (and taking a slight detour via Macquarie's Point in Sydney for one last glimpse of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge) we finally arrived in Kiama to put up our tent in the dark. Along the way we drove along the Bridge Cliff Road - a new road that has been constructed jutting out into the water that is supposed to rival the Great Ocean Road. It was actually a really nice drive and with the sun setting as we drove along, the sky was full of all shades of red until the night set in.
On Thursday we set off along one of the many cycle paths in the town that took us along the coast of Kiama, past several beaches and up to the lighthouse and big blowhole. The blowhole is one of the major attractions of Kiama but after standing around for a few minutes and not seeing anything, we headed on to see what else was about.
We had read about the Cathedral Rocks along some of the northern beaches of Kiama Downs, so we took the car on a bit of a drive to see if we could find them, but after parking along one of the streets and trekking around for a while amongst some trees and overgrown grasses we headed back to the car. As we drove back along the road we spotted the rocks and realised we had driven straight passed them earlier on, so we pulled into a little car park next to the beach and jumped out. While we were walking along the sand we could see a few people climbing around the rocks and when we got there we turned a corner and were confronted with a whole group of old people sitting in the shelter of the rocks eating their lunch!
Our next stop was supposed to be at some other rocky area that is meant to resemble the surface of the moon, but once again it was nowhere to be found and the one road that looked like it would take us there turned out to be an access route for quarry vehicles only! We took this as a sign that it wasn't meant to be, so we headed back to Kiama as there were still a few things that we wanted to see there.
When we got back we took off on foot up the hill towards the little blowhole as it was supposed to be more productive than the bigger one. The walk was a bit of a struggle to begin with as the hills around Kiama are almost vertical, but once we got there we found a nice little rocky outcrop that we could sit on while we waited for the blowhole to spring into action! We didn't have to wait for very long as the water soon spurted through the hole and into the air and although it wasn't particularly spectacular it was a good little spot for seeing out across the coastline. After a few eruptions we turned around to head back and were surprised to see a whole group of people had turned up while we were sitting there.
Our final activity of the day was to head into the nearby town of Gerrigong in the evening, with a quick stop at Mount Pleasant lookout on the way, to pick up a pizza from 'Zoobs'. And not just any pizza, but a wood fired pizza with sweet potato, salami, mozzarella, pine nuts, crème fresh and basil. Yummy!!
Yesterday was decidedly relaxed in comparison as we just spent the day by the beach enjoying the sun that was currently beaming down on us.
This morning we got up early so that we could make the most of the day, only to find that our bikes had been stolen in the night from right outside our tent! To say we were a little bit annoyed would be a gross understatement! Knowing that there was nothing that we could really do we packed everything else up and were soon on our way (after a quick stop at the local police station to report it) to Canberra, the nation's capital, to see if it is boring as everyone says it is.
