We arrived in Fiji airport after nineteen hours of travelling with a six hour wait in Sydney, which despite being one of the most well known cities in the world, has one of the worst airports and there was very little to do, although we did get our first proper sausage for a month for breakfast!
When we landed in Fiji airport we were greeted by some Fijians singing their little hearts out to welcome us! It took quite a while to get through immigration so the little kids dancing for the singers kept us amused for a while! After we'd got our bags we were pointed in the direction of the Feejee Experience stand to get our free transfer to our free bed for the night so we were giving a little shell necklace and asked to wait for our transfer to arrive, our first experience of Fiji time as five minutes soon turned into an hour and we got to our hostel around 9pm and headed straight to bed.
Yesterday we did very little except take a little look round and catch up on sleep that we had missed over the last few days.
This morning we were due to be picked up at 9am, but in keeping with Fiji time, it was 10am before we got to board our big green bus! This is also when we experienced our first Fijian road! Some are normal roads like home but this one was a cobble beach and it was sloped so when the guide stopped the bus to tell us about what we would be doing that day we were sitting at a 45 degree angle!!
Our first stop was Natodola beach which we were told was one of the nicest beaches on the main island which we won't argue with! It was huge and there were the biggest waves ever that just came out of nowhere! It was a bit exhausting though so we were more than happy to see our BBQ being cooked for when we'd finished jumping around like lunatics!!!
Next stop was a traditional Fijian village. We were taken into the chief's home and explained the culture and traditions of the different cultures in Fiji. We all had to wear sarongs including the blokes who all complained about them to begin with but it must have only been to look like they didn't like it, because most of them kept them on for quite some time after they needed to!
After we were explained the culture our 'guides' showed us around the village. Ours was 7! He showed us the well, the school, the church and his house! It was kind of a whistle stop tour though because he was more interested in trying to get David to run around than actually show us anything! He assured us he'd been practising his rugby too and was going to play for Fiji! At the end of our tour all of the kids sung the Fijian national anthem and it was time for us to leave. At the village we also learnt why most of them are so laid back and don't mind the big resorts being built. It is because those in the villages that may look poor from the outside actually own the land and lease it to the resorts who pay a fortune for it each month. So when someone wants to build a resort they pay the villagers loads of money for the privilege and then they have to train and employ the villages in the resort! As our guide said, his guide job is beer money!
Next stop was sand boarding down the biggest sand dune either of us had ever seen! It was quite a hike to the top but didn't take very long to reach the bottom especially on the black board which was the fastest and on which David nearly broke his neck when he feel off at the bottom of the thing! We'll probably go and do this again when the girls come over although we might need to strap David onto the board!
From the sand dunes we went to the hostel to stay the night but as most people do the tour in four days so will stay where ever they are dropped off, they were charging stupid prices. We tried to get into the beach house but it was fully booked so us and another couple found a great little place for just fifteen quid a night right on the beach and with hardly anyone else around. We are planning to stay here for the next three nights to have a few relaxing days and Darren, one of the people staying with us, is a chief with a Michelin star so we are planning eat very well for the next couple of nights!
