sisters on tour
Venezuela - well, what can be said here. Caracas is quite possibly the worst city we have ever visited, and im not saying that lightly either. Its dirty, extremely dangerous, and totally not geared up to cope with a single tourist either, never mind a few here and there. We spent approx 5 days there and were confined to our hotel room where we entertained ourselves by watching Warner Brothers TV due to the fact that we were too scared to even think about venturing out after dark. Various people warned us not to go out after dark so we though it best to take their advice. We eventuallt moved to a backpackers hostel where we stayed 1 night before fleeing to Canaima National park.
The park was amazing and we booked ourselves on a 3 day expedition to see Angel Falls. Day 1 we were taken to a different waterfall and even got to go behind it which was brill, before swimming in the little pool. All was a bit up in the air though as we were so tired upon arrival that i managed to leave the wallet on the bus. Hige panic as had all credit cards (both of ours), cash , the lot. Yet, faith in human nature prevailed and we got it back in tact thanks to the honesty of the tour bus driver who found it (thank god).
We camped overnight in a hammock which was brilliant and although there were no showers, we still managed to have a brilliant time chatting to other travellers about their experiences and where they had been. The food was surprisingly good too considering we were in the middle of the jungle. We were bitten a few times by mozzies though not too bad. It seems as though when ever Amy is around, they leave everyone alse alone (bless her!)
The falls themselves were definately worth the hike though, the tallest in the world, they are nearlly 1000 mentres (most of it free fall). We even got half hour to swim in the small pool at the bottom, though the water was freezing!
we then headed to Margarita Island via Puerto la Cruz where we spent the night at a hotel reccommended in our guide book only to be awoken by a cockroach crawling over us, it was a delightful experience as you can imagine. Then followed an entire day at the ferry terminal and waiting in line for almost three hours to get a ticket before arriving at the island with no accommodation booked. still, we managed to find a nice, clean hotel right near the beach in Playa del Agua where we spent the remainder of our time chilling by the beach with a pina colada in one hand and a good book in the other - perfect!
All in all, Venezuela wasnt that bad but we definately will not be going back to Caracas ever again. A learning curve to say the least.....
