Guess where we've just been! To the opppppeeeeerrrrrraaaaaaa! That's right me and Bridgey have just been to watch an outside opera performance at Sydney opera house, it was quite something! (plus it was free, always a bonus, we stumbled upon it by chance, not the opera hpuse, you can hardly stumble upon that!). Anyway more of Australia in a minuite.
To Fiji- a well deserved holiday within a holiday- it's hard work this travelling milarky. It was all fun and frolics at the airport when Bridgey's bag went missing due to Jake's blooming bodyboard. Never fear....we have it back! Unfortunately though they didn't do our washing for us, they left it for us-how kind. We did a bit of island hopping in Fiji- from Nadi we caught a 40ft (maybe-we're making it up, like everything we've written in this journal-we've really been hibernating-sat in our room in Worcester) caterman to a little island (well not so little in comparison to some-some of the islands you can walk around in in 7 minuites) at the top of the Yasawa's (Yasawa's being a set of islands on the west of the Vitu Levu (the mainland))- it was called Nacula. Nacula is comprised of 4 villages and one school - the kids get a boat to school on a sunday afternoon, board there during the week then get a boat home for the weekend-how cool is that! The place we stayed- Melbravo was fantastic, it was like a home from home, we stayed in beautiful bure (little huts)-they even put flowers on our bed (which was nice until all the ants came-how ungrateful are we). We were the only one's at the resort at one point so were like part of the family. We spent most of our days making shell necklaces, wandering along the beach, swimming in the rain and trekking through the jungle avoiding giant crab holes. We drank kava (in effect muddy water- it's a traditional narcotic drink used as a display of friendship) with the locals and doing the 'bula' dance which is actually the macarana just shouting 'bula' at the end which means welcome. We also watched some traditional spear dancing and joined in with antics- it was great fun. By the way Jakey we've made sockball famous-it'll be spreading throughout Sweden, Australia and Fiji.
After Nacula we sailed back down to Waya (i'm being told to write without Bridget's shorts-she's not bitter at all about me leaving them behind-that's despite me tracking them down and getting them back, after asking the policeman to radio the boat in search of a pair of shorts-it was a good idea at the time, he did give me a funny look though) which is at the bottom of the Yasawa's. Waya was lovely to, it was quite lush in terms of vegetation (i'm not suprised though the amount of rain we had at times-let's say we spent more time playing card games than sunbathing) and has a strip of beach connecting Waya to one of the other islands which was beautiful. Whilst on Waya we went for a few walks-going left at the mango tree (as were the indepth directions we were given-true Fijian style), went to a Methodist service which actually turned out to be one of the main services in their calendar-it was the eqivalent of our harvest festivals with everyone taking along some of last years crops, we visited a school which is considerably wealthier than any of the schools we saw in Kenya and watched a fantastic fire dance. We attempted to go snorkelling (just a mask-no flippers, no snorkel- not sure if you can actually call that snorkelling) and saw some electric blue fish, some tiny yellow fish and two bright blue starflish. Jo also had a go at spear fishing, well not actually spear fishing fishing-i did it on dry land and still managed to loose the spear and injure myself (ego bruising hurts).
Then back to Nadi to end our travels and search for Bridgey's shorts.
Then OZ! Slight culture difference-no more palm tree's just sky scrapers, coke signs and good architecture- ooo and beautiful parks-we went to the Botanical gardens today and it was amazing-we're going back tomorrow for a picnic. We thought the garden was a beautiful setting for a wedding until we saw about 6 brides-nothing like being original-to be fair to them it is beautiful though. Yesterday we went to Paddy's market which was quite something, we also went for a wonder around China town and tried 'proper' chinese food from the street market- we ate it in the park with a big crow eyeing our food up (it was the biggest crow in the world!). We're staying in Kings Cross at the mo, (Paul you were right) it's quite something here- a real mix of people where anything goes, we're staying at a nice backpackers for a week or so until we pick up our car. We're handing our flyers for 2 hours a day and in return getting free accomadation and food- we had a bbq today which was cool. Anyway we better go-need some sleep- had a mad night out in Sydney last night.
We're picking our car up on Friday and hitting the road- next time you hear from us it'll be from Melbourne where fingers crossed we'll be telling you about our new jobs.
So until then it's night night (or morning in you case). XXX
