Around the World Forever
With the craziness of Songkran behind us, it's time to move on our plans to rent motorbikes. And Wow have the rental options changed since four years ago when I was here. Many shops now offer brand new, quality Japanese bikes. My buddy from Spain, Carles, and I opted for beautiful Kawasaki Versys 650s with anti-lock brakes for our long journey on Thailand's northern country roads through the mountains near the Myanmar border.
The first thing we learned the hard way was that just because Songkran was finished in Chiang Mai does not mean it's finished everywhere else. In fact, most of the smaller communities in the north were just getting started. And boy did we pay the price for not knowing this! In typical Thai fashion, evil gangs of 12 year-olds would stake out the side of the highway armed with buckets and hoses with an unlimited supply of water. There was no way to get through on the motorcycles with out getting soaked. Unlike the water pistols we employed for the urban street battles of Chiang Mai, these youths were using what Carles and I began to call "armas de destruccion masiva" ... or weapons of mass destruction in English. In fact we were so wet after our first day on the road that we had to dry out everything in our hotel room including our money. The scene of all that cash spread out over the beds was something out of a gangster movie.
The next day we continued up through the mountains to the northern most point in Thailand with the Myanmar border. Riding east we stopped for lunch at the Golden Triangle, the tri-border of Thailand, Myanmar, and Loas and a region made famous for illicit opium and heroin production. Heading further south brought us to Chiang Rai and without a doubt, one of the most fascinating "art projects" I've ever seen; the White Temple. Check out the photos!

Doc Leavers Were you just in Erie? Some actives said you came to a party on Saturday. I was confused since this entry was just posted. Call me when you come to Erie or have one of the brothers call me. I could have come over if you were at the party. Doc
