Around the World Forever
Paid to Play Episode 6: The one where one of my passengers gets stung by the potentially deadly Portuguese Man of War.
The world's second largest barrier reef offers great snorkeling and diving. And this time out I finally got my hands on a waterproof Olympus camera. It's awesome. I have some great photos of some of the larger fish and creatures of the area. But what made this trip especially exciting was that one of my passengers got stung by a Portuguese Man of War. It happened on the return trip to the island after snorkeling had finished. As we partied our way back with copious amounts of rum punch, it was inevitable that someone would need the bathroom. Unfortunately, the boat's toilet was out of order which meant a brief stop was necessary for everyone to jump in the water and take care of business. And that's when it happened... the one in a million chance that you would jump off a boat and swim through the poisonous tentacles of a Portuguese Man of War. Rebecca, one of my tour passengers from Vancouver, was the unlucky victim. She said she never experienced pain like that in her life. And all she could do was endure it until we got back to shore where I accompanied her to the clinic to get a Benedryl shot right into the blood stream. And then things got even worse for poor Rebecca. Her fear of needles compounded by the fact that her veins are difficult to find was yet another hurdle to an already trying afternoon. But eventually the Cuban docor found what he was looking for and gave her the jab. What an experience, at least from my perspective. One thing is certain. You do NOT want to ever get stung by one of these things!
