I'm lying in bed typing this, and I can occasionally hear the strange cracking sound from the electric street-car cables outside our window, or I can when Sal stops snoring! We're in San Francisco, the city of trams, hills, gays, hippies, and Alcatraz!
We arrived yesterday afternoon, but we were sad to have spent so little time in Seattle. The B&B which we stayed in was fantastic; gorgeously decorated, designed, and furnished, impeccably clean, a beautiful house in a lovely area of the city. We sat at breakfast, chatting with the other guests, all American, about the UK and USA. They couldn't believe you don't get free coffee refills in the UK, and that Kate isn't a commoner, we couldn't believe you can buy guns at the supermarket in the USA!
The cab driver who took us to the airport was originally from Ethiopia, he loved football, and sadly, Man Utd. Nani was his favourite player, he didn't like O'Shea, though! He cracked us up when he said he couldn't stand London, 'too many immigrants, it's like being in Africa!' I didn't think you could get the Daily Mail out here!
We were in bed last night and Sal was looking at her twitter feed (oo-er missus, twitter ye not!), and people were starting to pass on the news about Bin Laden. We put the TV on, and saw Obama's speech, live from the White House. Shortly after, a truck went past the B&B flying the stars and stripes, and playing the national anthem! As has already been said, we didn't think they took the Bin's out on a Bank Holiday!
The B&B we're staying at here in SF is owned by Brits, and it's not as beautifully designed as the one in Seattle, it's very much a 'British-style B&B', in fact it's a bit 'Fawlty Towers'!
We came downstairs and the 'innkeeper', Kit, was giving the chambermaid, Margarita, some instructions, 'you have to water the plants, you know, agua, si?' I don't THINK she's from Barcelona, but who knows! The breakfast (which WAS beautiful) was served in the living room, on little fold-up side tables, it looked like meal-time at a Residential Home!
Where this place beats the beautiful Seattle B&B though, is that there is always tea, coffee, and biscuits available, it's a huge Brucey Bonus when you've been tramping the streets, to get back and have a brew!
The area we're staying in is ok, a bit yuppie, it's all posh hairdressers, pilates studios, and joggers, but we're walking distance from the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, and the Alcatraz Ferry. We went over to Alcatraz today, it was a fabulous trip, so atmospheric, you get a set of headphones to wear while you go 'round, and it gives you a whole 'audio-visual infotainment' experience, sounds cheesy, but it was great!
Tomorrow, it's the open-top bus tour of the city (I may try and get some sort of trophy to wave at passers-by!), hopefully the weather will be good again!
