So we flew up to Manaus and took a 4 day Jungle Trek 200 km away from the city. We took a coach to a local town the boat across to the lodge where we stayed, totally away from life we know with no electricity and living on the riverside.
On our first day we went out on the boat and rowed through the treetops as it was high/wet season during our stay. We went piranha fishing and Sophie managed to catch one and later ate it for dinner! We swam in the river and relaxed on the jetty, so peaceful and avoided being eaten! Before dinner we watched the sunset from the tower and saw lightening in the distance.
The next day we took a walk through the surrounding forest and learnt about some of the plants used for medicines. Our guide hoaxed a tarantula out of its hole, it was huge and we kept our distance! We saw some racoons up in the trees above and giant ants as well as a telephone tree which natives use to contact each other in the jungle. In the afternoon we made our hour walk into the jungle to our camp for the night. We set up our hammocks, looked for dry firewood and cleaned and cooked our dinner on the fire. We ate chicken, sausage and rice with vegetables. We made our plates from leaves and carved our spoons from wood, with the help of our guide of course. Sleeping in hammocks seemed like great fun as we heard the animals in the distance, until the morning! Amy and Sophie were eaten alive by mosquitos in the night despite being covered head to toe in clothes, blankets and rain macs not forgetting repellent too! Looking diseased and infected we made our way back to the lodge after exploring the area round the camp and going further into the jungle. Spending the day hidden indoors Jaz ventured out for the afternoon excursions! She went fishing for Piranhas again, and caught one! As well as spotting pink dolphins! We watched the beautiful sunset again, as pictured!
On our last day we got up at 5am to watch the sunset and rowed out into the river to get the best views. After breakfast we visited a local family. It was really interesting being able to witness their way of life. We helped them make their corn and looked around their farmland! We had lunch before making the journey back to Manaus.
On our last day in Manaus Sophie went to see the rivers meeting, where the Black and Brown rivers meet but do not mix. She went out on a boat to the middle of the river and also held a Sloth too.
What an experience!
