I started the day with breakfast from the nearby grocery store and then headed into the downtown area. I caught the metro to Deák tér, the city's main square, and then walked to Vörosmarty tér and met up with a free city walking tour. The first stop was the little princess statue (who actually looks like a boy cause the sculptor used his son as a model), whose knees are shiny from so many Hungarians rubbing them for luck. This was just the first example of the Hungarian's weird fascination with rubbing statues. We walked by Saint Stephen's Basilica, which houses the right hand of Hungary's first king and founder (King Saint Stephen), and by a statue of a police officer whose plump stomach has been rubbed so many times that it's shiny like the knees of the little princess. We stopped outside a couple historic buildings before crossing the Chain Bridge and starting to ascend the Castle Hill. Halfway up, our tour guide gave us a brief history of Hungary and then we continued up to the top, where we received a fantastic view over the city, particularly the Parliament building across the river. We passed by Buda Castle and the Hungarian equivalent of the White House and, my personal favorite, a statue of a man on horseback. The horse's balls are a glistening gold color from being rubbed by Hungarians who claim it brings luck in bed! The tour ended by Matthias Church and after thanking the guide, I walked to the Fisherman's Bastion (a beautiful terrace overlooking the city with 7 towers) with an Aussie I met on the tour named Simone. We snapped some pictures of the great view and then descended the steps back through little side streets to the river. We crossed back over the Chain Bridge and then she decided to take a nap back at her hostel, so I continued on alone back to St. Stephen's Basilica. After touring the amazing church, I was starting to wear out so I grabbed a coffee to energize me enough to go to Széchenyi Baths, the largest bathhouse in Europe. I was soaking in the medicinal waters when I met two girls from Massachusetts named Ashley and Katherine. We explored through the various pools, steam rooms and saunas for hours and when we eventually left I felt like a prune. I headed back to my hostel and while I was making dinner I met two cool English guys named Matt and Patrick. We played poker until around 1 and then they headed out to party some more. The baths drained my energy so I just stayed at the hostel and called my sister Jenna over Skype before calling it a night. There was still more to see in Budapest, but Croatia is calling!
