Last night I attempted to learn Tango. We rocked up to a town hall in Palermo and joined the locals in their weekly class and dance. With only one glass of wine for dutch courage and being the only gringoes in the place (no one spoke English!) it was slightly embarassing to begin with. I can honestly say however that we have mastered the basic seven steps and we gave the local Argentine boys a good laugh in the meantime!
It seems like we have only been in Buenos Aires for a few days instead of over a week. We have eaten, drunk and shopped far too much. I have had more steaks and red meat this week than in my whole entire life but when in BA you have no other choice!
We started the week in a hostel called Millhouse which is notorious for partying and indeed we averaged a bed time of around 9am. We then moved to a private suite in a hostel nearer the Oblescio for a bit of rest but ended up heading back to the Millhouse for more partying one night later. I´ve apparently eaten in the best steak house in the city (La Caberra) as well as an all you can eat and drink restaurant in Puerto Madero (for six pounds including a bottle of red wine and profiteroles to finish!) We´ve eaten in cafe´s including the famous old Cafe Tortoni and even got a boat to Uruguay for the afternoon to have a pizza and coffee over there! We went to see a professional Tango show (The Michaelango) and this involved a champagne reception, canapes, three course meal and free-flowing wine. I am full just thinking about this week.
The shops are also amazing. From boutiques in Palermo, to shopping malls, and markets in Recolleta, San Telmo and Palermo - we have done them all. I restricted myself to one dress, one vintage leather bag, one scarf (it is absolutely freezing here), one jumper (really cold) and some earrings. It was tough but I can´t possibly carry any more.
We also paid a quick visit to Evita´s grave and a sculpture which I forget the name of.
Today is laundry, admin and detox day ready for the flight to Lima tomorrow and the ten days in the Amazon and Andes. We are kinder wishing that we did BA after the trek now as we are not in the best condition for it - I´m rather scared! I will be incommunicado for the next few days as I trek for 25 miles. I´ll let you know how it goes............................................Aaaarh!
