We left the grand canyon after taking pictures of Riccy and Randy and wandering below the rim then made our way to the bright lights if Las Vegas. We drove for hours seeing nothing special apart from long long roads, oh as we were nearing Vegas we did stop off and have a look at the Hoover Dam, which to be honest us nothing more than a dam to your average guy, though I do appreciate that some some engineery types it is a marvel. We took some snaps and left as the sun was setting and drive onto the bright lights. To be honest we got it bang on and drove in just as the sun was setting, driving up the strip with the top down and the tunes on loud, we must have looked a right pair, but it felt great. In all the excitement we drove straight past the hotel so had to double back a few streets and do the last part of the strip again (wot a pity) we eventually parked up and got into the room and literally fell on the bed exhausted from the excitement.
Next morning we woke early and had plans to party at the Marquee Dayclub so as not pay the ridiculous club drinks prices we cracked open the voddy and vino and proceeded to get drunken, it went down scarily well considering it was only half 9 in the morning.
The club rocked, it was a 14th floor pool area with cabanas and beds raised in the centre, beautiful people all around and Above and Beyond playing a rousing soundtrack. A great day. (...and in bed by 10pm to boot). Day 2 was spent in old Las Vegas, up on Fremont St, the original Vegas, this wasnt a nostalgia trip we only found it cos we was looking for a cheap breakfast !! We wandered through the old arcades and returned back to the strip and wandered in and out of the upper strip hotels. To say they're extravagant doesn't cut it, not a penny is spared on these inside and out, quite ridiculous really but s'pose as they say......only in Vegas!! Tried to gamble today but only got to play on a video poker game at a bar as its all prepaid card play now and not ye olde put a penny in, like I wanted it to be !!
Day3 was like day 2 but doing the hotels in the south of the strip, the only difference being that in the evening we had a few more beers than normal and got the balls to play on a blackjack table, at one point making $40 on one win, but obviously ultimately losing it all, good job it was only an initial $20 stake. We left the following morning albeit a little worse for wear so we kept the roof on and AC on, we again,....I again drove for what seemed miles on endlessly long straight roads running parallel to death valley for 100+miles before crossing it, then midway through the desert we got to a sign for a ghost town called Rhyolite, we pulled off the road to find this ghost town and got to the straightest longest road we had seen, fortunately we didn't have to drive all of it and pulled off after about a mile onto a dust track leading to some old buildings literally in the middle of nowhere, I took a few pics went to the toilet then got back in the car as there was signs everywhere saying 'caution rattlesnakes', ......bloody hate snakes!!!.
We rolled on outta death valley and into and over the Sierra Nevada's to our overnight stop in a place called convict lake ( a lake set in middle of granite cliffs, lovely views but was late and Jen was still feeling Pooooly so not much sight seeing just a sleep ready to set off to Yosemite in the morning.
Setting off early we drive for about 2hrs further into the mountains then onto the Tioga Rd which gets you into the park, we went up and up and up to an elevation of 8000ft, the views were fantastic, massive granite rocks reaching all the way to the road on both sides then into winding roads along pine forested valleys and then down into the Yosemite valley itself which itself is overwhelmingly beautiful, my simple words cannot explain it good enough, you will have to google 'Yosemite, tunnel view', to get an idea.
We rolled through the valley finding our planned campsite 'Camp4', again google it, as it's a famous climbers camp!!!
We spent 4 fantastic days there with 2hikes (yes Jen hiked!!?) and a visit to the big sequoia trees (huuuuge!!) and chilled ourselves out incredibly, loved it, loved it, loved it.
Now we're off to San Fran, and Jen is driving ( which is why I'm not watching and writing this instead!!) ;-)
