Tierra Del Fuego is BEAUTIFUL! Not a really a lot of special things to see or do (the town is pretty fead at night too) but, the scenery and feel of the place is amazing. Its wierd to think I´m right at the end of the world.
So, my first day here I went up a mountain to go trekking on a glciar. It was ok, great scenery. But, I´m not exactly kted out for trekking or anything...i have all cheap high street clothes, compared to everyone else who has proper trekking gear...so basically I got soaked and muddy, but it was worth it...the views were amazing. When we got past the forsted lowlands, and on to the snowy pleateaus, it was as though we were at the top of the end of the world...just nothing except snow and ice and the wind. No sound. No other people. I expected to see a yetty or something jump out. t was a long 8 hour trip, but despite that and the mud and wet, I think it was worth it.
The following day (Sunday), spent the morning doing more or less sod all as I just wanted to chill, and then went on a sailing trip around the isalnds in the beagle channel, which is the worlds most southernly set of waters. It was ok, but a bit boring...well very boring. It was very nice the scenery, and a nice thought to think Ive sailed there but yawn! And it was cold and rainy and the cafe on board was very over priced! But I got to see lots and lots of penguins in the wild! Win.
Yesterday I went to the amazing national park here, it´s snow capped mountains, hilly forests and coast line all in one...it s beautiful. Oneof the most stunning things Ive seen. I swaer the air, the light, the water down here, this far south, is soooo different. Its all natural, it´s been virtually untouched or unchanged by man as it so cut off from the rest of the world. We did a three hour trek along the cost line, which went really quickly as it was so amazing, then went kayaking in the sea which was just incredible...cold. But amazing, its really different to see it all from the water.
Ushuaia is a great place.Cold, cut off, but a nice place. The hostel is great too, one of the best in south america apparently. Its full of wet boring english people, artsy fartsy yanks who learn Thai and eat Sushi and argentines on holiday, which is pretty funny!
I head back to Mendoza on plane on Thursday.
I´d say this southern part of Patagonia..El Calafte and Tierra Del Fuego would be on eof my favourite parts of Argentina, it´s stunning. So vast, inhospitable, towering, snowy mountains, massive open spaces, amazingly blue lakes and ice glaicers..I know we have this in Europe (even in the UK), and I didnt expect it to impress me so much, but Patagonia has a very special feel to it. I´d definately come back to explore it more...I´d love to travel the legendry route 40, which is a basically unpaved road running from the extreme north of ARg to here, Che Guevara travelled it, and follows the Andes. I also love the North West of ARgie, where it´s all incan like, with jungle andes and indiginous communities, that area is just magical.
