Wow this place is amazing! Proper jungle style! It´s green, "tropical", and very humid and hot. I´m staying in a small town called Puerto Iguazu, which is basically a tourist town, with lots of hotels, touristy shops and internet cafes! But the surrounding area is pure green jungle, with pumas, lizards, snakes, monkeys, colourful birds, deadly spiders you name it, it´s here! It´s amazing! The highway surrounding us, is dotted by all these swanky, posh resorts with palms and swimming pools.
So, yesterday went to the Iguazu falls, which were massive (see the picture above), loud, powerful, wet and white!!! It sits in a national park, which is a protected zone, but still, theres plenty of very pricey kiosks and restaurants! There´s two main falls...la garganta del diablo (devil´s throat), and the other i cant remember! But it was literally a paradise jungle. Rainbows, palm trees, massive colourful butterflies, beaches...heaven (except the heat). I can´t describe the falls, you have to see the pictures. Or better still, go. The best thing I´ve seen so far. I then took a boat under the falls, and got soaked, and then went rapid water rafting on the river through the jungle, one side Argentina, the other side Brazil. Then a 4X4 through the jungle, seeing amazing trees, all very viney and palmy and thick. Very loud, the sound of tropical birds and insects. And we saw a monkey!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY! The food courts have these strange little ainmals, kind of like racoons, with stripy tails, brown fur and pointed noses that come right up and beg like dogs. Funny. But yeh, was just amazing!
Today I chilled this morning, and then took a adventure tour into the jungle. We drove in a big 4X4 jeep through these red/browny tracks through dense, protected jungle. We passed the wood huts of the indiginous "guaraní " peoples. They obvs arent very indigious these days...they wear westerner clothes etc... and have cars and vans. But their native homeland, and way of life is protected (they don´t pay taxes etc...). That was cool to see that. We then trekked through the jungle for about a mile which was, at times, terrorfying...it was very thick and dense, and dark in places. The insect and bird noises were very loud. Apart from that there wasn´t much other sound. The spider webs high up on the walk ways were home to massive venemous spiders. Scarey! It was un real! We then went zip wiring, 30metres up, over the tree tops. It was amazing, you hold onto a cable, and slide down this wire, over the top of the trees, to the next platform. Fast and thrilling. The views were amazing. My hands killed afterwards though, as I was clinging on for dear life! (We did obviously have helmets and harnesses etc...)
Next up, we abseiled down a waterful. Which was basically like any other abseil (ive done a few here in Argie), but just down a waterfull, then into a pool! So very wet, but thrilling. And the wildlife and birds surrounding the pool in the jungle was beautiful! I have never seen butterflies as huge and as colourful before.
This place is amazing! The best I´ve done! Tomorrow off for a day trip to Paraguay in the morning, then Brazil in the afternoon. Paraguay is a city tour, Brazil is more Iguazu falls and adventure in the jungle. One of these nights I´m going to a Brazilian dance show, which should be colourful! Just to explain, where I am right now sits on the border of Brazil and Paraguay...check out my map.
