We've spent 4 days in Dali now and absolutely love the place!!!! We're staying in a fab guesthouse just outside the walled city with mountains on one side and a huge lake on the other. We're at about 1,800 metres altitude so it is really cool, between 19 and 27 degrees depending on whether or not its raining - erm the rain is a bit more often than not here!!! The walled city is full of historic architecture and really picturesque buildings - lots of backpacker cafes as well, which we're not complaining about!!!! The area is a melting pot of cultures and you see soooo many different people in traditional dress - we went to the market yesterday where the locals from different tribes come to trade their wares which was an eye opener, we didn't fancy getting our teeth looked at by the market dentists, that's for sure!!!! It does seem that its more the elderly that are still wearing traditional clothes but they have such lovely old faces, full of character I think we'll get some great photos. We went to a cafe yesterday and Emma tried the traditional local dish - fried goats cheese with ham which is something we wouldn't have associated with Chinese food and it was lovely, unfortunately Jay had a lasagne and paid for it later with an upset tummy!!! He was ok though and is back on par today and sat as we speak drinking Dali Beer and local plum whiskey with the guesthouse owner who is an Aussie! We're off to Shangri La day after tomorrow with a view to heading further north into the mountains and the border with Tibet to do some amazing treks to glaciers, waterfalls and villages. All in all, we absolutely love Dali and apparently the further north you go it just gets better. Think we're going to really really enjoy it here :-)
P.S The photo for this blog entry is chicken feet, which the Chinese eat as a snack - still yet to try them but sure we'll have a go!!!!
