A story about a bear!
ÂÂ
"Pass the bear spray! There s a bear" Without hesitation, Jen passed it over, but wondering, was it another wind up?
ÂÂ
The daring duo had only just arrived in Yosemite that morning, and were out for a quiet afternoon stroll to 2 waterfalls near the Hetch Hetchy reservoir.
ÂÂ
Jen casually stepped to one side to see around the blouder that blocked her vision of the path ahead, and there, about 20m ahead, a Black Bear. It seemed to be foraging at the side of the track. Its forage seemed to be bringing it downhill, towards J and J.
ÂÂ
They had been talking in hushed voices, a habit developed from occasionally spotting deer in Britain. They then remember the oft repeated advice.
ÂÂ
Jim had already been walking backwards, the spray in his right hand, poised for use.
LOUDLY
"The Bear is walking towards us. We are doing what we should."
"I m sure it should have run off by now. It must know that we are here. "
"I think its gaining on us"
"Keep talking, loudly, but calmly. It needs to know that we are human."
ÂÂ
Hearts were beating fast. They both knew how unpredictable and how strong a Black Bear could be. They were keen not to stumble on the uneven path, keen not to move too quickly and appear to be prey running away, but VERY keen to put distance between themselves and the advancing creature.
ÂÂ
They rounded a blind bend... and once out of sight... broke into a run.
