We're now 4 days out of Madrid. The road here was quite challenging. It's very dry, rough and really hot here. I know it doesn't really sound like much to complain about when I hear how cold the weather has been down there, but when you see a sign at 10 in the morning saying it's already 33°C, you know it's going to be a stinking hot day.
Near the coast it was warm too, but at least you could still feel the humidity hanging in the air, where as here it's so dry. We keep on drinking litres and litres of water to try and keep our fluids up (would be easier if we were camels I think). It reminds us too of Australia in some ways. We've even seen some dead snakes on the roads. Apearently there are 13 different kinds of snakes in Spain (at least, that what I've read on internet), 5 of which poisonous. Quite reassuring for when you hear something rustling in your tent during the night ;-)
The first day we cycled to Aranjuez. This is where the king of Spain has his summer residence. From there on we went to Toledo. This used to be the capital of Spain until the 16th Century, when Madrid became the new capital. Day 3 took us to a lake just outside of the mountain area where we were, I think, the only tourists to have ever come there :-)
Today we have cycled our first day through the Extramadura mountains. We're at a campside which is located right next to a river where you can go and swim. Tomorrow we are heading further towards Placensia.
