Jason in Austria
So I woke up late again today. I keep telling myself that I need to start getting up around 7 or 8am to prepare myself for when classes start, but so far I have been failing.
The other day I went bike riding with my friend Phillip. He is very nice. He doesn't attend school, but he is a friend of Martin's so he hangs out with us a lot. His father owns his own painting business and Phillip helps run it. I went with Zach and Martin to have coffee at Phillip's apartment and was amazed at the lavish lifestyle he lives! It is a huge condo that was built two hundred and fifty years ago. Inside it has a lot of modern art and very up-to-date decor. He has a maid come twice a week to clean!
So Phillip and I went biking through the mountains and made stops at the stable where his horse is kept. There were many riders practicing all sorts of things and private lessons going on. It was very fun to watch. We also rode by a Vineyard where we ate some grapes! The only grapes I've tasted that were better than these were in Oregon.
After our Biking trip we went to Phillip's parent's house for lunch. His mother used to have her own bakery and was very good with Austrian dishes. She didn't speak very much English at all so I had to speak German mostly. I surprised myself with how much I was able to communicate with her. Phillip would help us out every now and then with translation, but we managed mostly without him. I told her things like how long I was going to be staying in Austria, what my school in Kansas was like, what she thought about the upcoming elections in Austria, and that the food she made tasted very good. She even complemented my German! She also said that she would take me all around Wiener Neustadt if I would give her English Lessons. After lunch she brought out ice cream dishes with some kind of hot raspberry sauce on top. These were amazing!
After I left Phillip's house I moved from my room in Martin's house to my room in the Dorms. I finally got everything set up and working correctly and I feel much better when things are organized. Zach (my roommate) and I went out and bought a microwave yesterday as well as a toaster. We bought the cheapest ones since they cannot come back with us to the U.S.! I did buy a 2.1 speaker system for my computer and spent and little more money and it because it is small enough that I can bring it back to the States.
Going grocery shopping was even more interesting. I was trying to find things for sandwiches and it wasn't going well. They have American style bread and cheese, but it is really REALLY gross! Plus it has an American flag plastered across the packages. Buying that combined with my accent may prove to be a bad combination. So I ended up getting lots and lots of Wiener Schnitzel! That as well as an "Austrian" loaf of bread, which seems to be much better than the American style.
Last night we had a meeting for all of the international students. They went over things like rules, train vouchers, etc. I think I am going to get along well with most of them. I remember there being 2 students from Poland, a few from Hungary, Spain, Turkey, Mexico, Russia, Czechoslovakia, Japan, Ireland, Canada, and a Chinese girl who was actually from the school in Canada. I also met the other two Americans. I cannot remember there names right now but they seemed very nice. Both of them were from Florida State University. The Austrian students that are here are all also very friendly people.
Tonight I am going to the gym with Martin and Deeder. That should be an interesting experience!
