Day 39
12 hours and 2 flights later we have finally arrived in Cairns, Australia. Our first flight left from Singapore and 5 1/2 hours later we landed in Darwin. We then had a 4 hours stop over in Darwin before taking another 2 1/2 hour flight into Cairns. We were initially a bit dubious before leaving Singapore as although our flight was booked with Qantas, the flight we were going on was operated by and airline called Jet Star. However it turned out to be a fairly decent flight and although we didn't manage to get any sleep the service was pretty good. Finally arrived into Cairns airport at 9.30 am and made our way to the accommodation we had booked for the next 3 nights. On arrival it turned out we had made a silly mistake and actually booked ourselves a campervan pitch with electrical hook up (standard 2 person pitch) :) Thankfully the staff at 'Sunland Leisure Park' had already noticed before our arrival and were able to accommodate us into one of their cabins (with a bedroom and kitchenette). We did have to pay a little bit more but not much, we always knew the accommodation in Australia was going to be considerably more than it was in Asia. Once we were settled in we ventured to the closest supermarket to stock up on food & beer for the next few days, felt strange deciding what to cook ourselves for dinner again. Spent the rest of the afternoon by the pool, it is extremely hot in Cairns the 95% humidity doesn't help!
Day 40
Went into the city today. Where we are staying is oddly quiet and only a 10 minute bus ride away from the City. At first Cairns city didn't seem any busier than where we are staying but if you make your way to the Esplanade its like a bustling holiday village with bars, restaurants, and even a large lagoon swimming pool. The immediate coastline isn't a typical beach hangout, so travellers and locals tend to use the lagoon to chill out which is large enough for all and right next to the sea anyway.
Day 41
Spent most of our day arranging our travel for the next week or so down the east coast of oz. We are travelling by Greyhound bus so had to go and collect our tickets for that. Luckily we got to the office just before it closed for the day. We had originally planned to leave Cairns tomorrow morning only to find out that all of tomorrows buses are full, so are now travelling overnight tonight. The bus leaves here at 12.30 am and we are heading to Townsville where we are going to catch a ferry over to Magnetic Island for a couple of days.
