Day 90 to 96
Arrived in Queenstown yesterday and stayed in one of the newer campsites, we did plan on staying at one of the DOC sites (Department of Conservation), because they are a lot cheaper and some times free. This particular DOC camp however was up a really steep dirt track and we were worried the campervan might not make it :). Tried a 'Furgburger' at Furgburger..was by far the best burger we have EVER had and was absolutely huge. Spent a few hours looking around Queenstown, then left later that day for Milford Sound.
We didn't arrived in Milford until early the next day with the rain cursing us again. Unfortunately we can't tell you much about Milford Sound because we can't exactly say we saw it. With rain at Milford comes a lot of Mist and although the cruise's were still running to Mitre peak the mist would have covered the best views. We were a bit disappointed, not just because of the rain but also because of the drive! Milford sound isn't really on route to anywhere so it felt like we had drove all that way for nothing. Did think about waiting for the rain and mist to clear but the weather prediction said it would be like that for up to 3 days. Having been slightly disappointed this misfortune did earn us a few extra days :).
Next stop was Dunedin. We saw Baldwin st, the steepest street in the word and the old railway station. Rather than staying in Dunedin the night, we drove the short distance to Otago Peninsula (about 30 Min's away). We took the highest road possible (Highcliff Road) to get the best views and it was so worth it. A bit taxing on the poor campervan but it did a good job :). We worked up an appetite that night with a long walk at Sandfly Bay. Sandfly is known to have Sea lion and penguin sightings so we though we'd try our luck and although didn't see the rare yellow eyed Penguin, we did see two massive Sea lions sleeping in the sand dunes. It was a good walk actually, great fun running down the sand dunes (a lot harder getting back up them again). There were probably only 3 other people on the beach while we were there and it felt like a treat seeing something like sea lions for free ha,ha. We finished off at Otago with a trip to Larnach Castle- New Zealand's only castle and decided as we had accumulated a few extra days with Missing out at Milford sound, we would drive to Mt Cook. We drove as far as Omarama that night, stopping to see the Moeraki Boulders and Oamaru on route. Got to Mt cook early the next day.
What a surprise- it was Windy and Rainy when we arrived at Mt Cook,, but we hung around a few hours and eventually it cleared. Mt Cook is NZ highest point so you can imagine the view. The White snow cap of Mt Cook contrasting with the clear blue sky was beautiful but we don't think any of the photo's we took will do it any justice. You have to see the full panoramic view to get the full feeling.
Our last stop in NZ is Christchurch, we stayed the night in Lake Takapo on route to Christchurch which was a pretty little town (literally located on lake Takapo). We Have spent most of our time in Christchurch walking up the Avon river and around Cathedral square. We dropped the campervan off this morning so have been walking around town which is easy to do in Christchurch. Will Fly to Fiji tomorrow morning, hopefully for a week of Sun Sea and Sand before coming back to reality on the 13th of Feb. We will post one more Blog entry once we are home from Fiji but, encase we get carried away with real life and don't get a chance to upload it for a few weeks, we hope you have enjoyed reading our blog. We have really enjoyed sharing our adventure and hope that maybe we have inspired a few other people to take the leap and venture on your own trip of a life time.
