Now I´ve been back in Norway for little over one week and I am amazed how fast I´ve got back to my old life. The things and people I´ve been so used to being around for 5-6 weeks are suddenly gone and are too easily forgotten. It´s good to be back but I still want to hold on to the good things about traveling. So I thought I´d just sum up a few things.
The trip was great. Of course, during the trip there were things that I would gladly have been without and things weren´t always great. The noise, the heat, the same food all the time... And group dynamics isn´t alwayw fun either. But all in all it was a great experience and a great bunch to be traveling with so I´m happy I went on that trip.
Whether or not I would go on that sort of trip again is another question. The area I definitively want to go back to and probably also go overland. The best would be to have a jeep of my own and go with a small group (and probably a local guide) and travel overland in the same area. That would be great! Going overland on that kind of truck again I would probably not do. Not because of Dragoman, I think they did a good job. But I found that I actually prefer being more in charge of what I´m doing and where I´m going than what I was on the truck. I could probably be more involved but it´s so easy to just tag along. Besides, when traveling alone and finding my own way, by bus, train or whatever transportation available, I get to be more flexible and also to be more in contact with the local people. I´ve missed that on the trip but at least I got a bit of that in the end.
Still, as I said, it was a great trip. And there are some moments I think about from time to time that just makes me smile wherever I am and whatever I do, some of these memorable moments not even mentioned before in my blog. Some of the most memorable parts of the trip were:
- Discussing the erotic sides to computer hardware during supper in Naryn (I don´t blame anyone for not understanding that! But it was very funny)
- Horseback riding by Lake Karakol
- Cruising in an open jeep up the steep hillside in Passu listening to A-ha on the cassette player in the car
- The hiking up to the mountain medows in Karimabad
- Enjoying a good cup of coffee, walnut cake and the view of the Pakistani mountains in Karimabad
- The border ceremony in Pakistan
- Having beer at the hotel in Amritsar, India, after a great supper
- Sitting in a park in Lucknow and the rain suddenly pouring down
- The really shabby hotels in Lucknow and Sonauli
- The Dane on the bus to Kathmandu
The moments are many and these are only a few of the things I will remember from the trip. Some of these experiences weren´t really fun when I was there but now I just think about them and laugh. And I guess that´s the way it´s supposed to be. Remember and smie...
