Day 7 17 day peregrine tour Burma with local guide Ko Ko Aye. We headed off from Sky Palace on a day trip to Mt Popa. We headed out of the city of both old Bagan and new Bagan into the rural countryside.
We stopped at local cottage industry on the way and learnt how palm oil and moonshine was produced. It was a good opportunity to observe the lifestyle of the people and talk with some of the villagers.
The main purpose of the trip today was to visit Mt Pooa. It is an extinct volcano that U.S. home to local spirits and deities known as nats. It is 777 steps up to the top of Mt Popa.
We were warned before entering the Pahoa to take off our hats, glasses and put any food or water in our packs and not accompany any locals up the steps. Locals feed the monkeys and monkeys can cause rabies. There were lots of stalls and wares to be purchased on the way up.
Because it's a pagoda and or temple you will need to take your shoes off. Clothing should be knee length and shoulders covered. Best way to see this pagoda is go with a locale guide . 777 steps will be a major challenge if you have a knee injury or poor balance.
