Back into Peru to continue our march northwards, we stopped in Arequipa for a few days. The central part of Arequipa is a bit like a less polished, less touristy version of Cusco, but walk a short distance from the centre and it becomes a bit unappealing.
Like many others, we used Arequipa as a base to make a trip to the Colca Canyon, touted as the world's second deepest, where we did a two day hike. We were fortunate to see Condors flying in the canyon, and the hike itself was pretty spectacular, taking us through craggy cliffs and many spectacular views. On the hike we stayed overnight at an oasis for trekkers at the bottom of the canyon alongside the river that runs through it. We woke in the morning to find two out of control fires next to our hostel that needed urgent attention or the whole village could have been flattened - fun times.
We also took the chance to try some rafting in the area. The trip was full of some pretty extreme adrenaline rushes as we hurtled down rocky, speedy rapids having to duck away from the canyon walls and try not to fall in. We even went down backwards at one point, a nice surprise thrown in without warning.
