We took a shuttle bus from El Salvador to the town of Leon, in Nicaragua, skipping through Honduras in the process. We were quite thankful that the driver took care of the border crossings for us in and out of Honduras, as borders always attract the dodgiest people of the region. The whole day was lost in transit and we arrived in Leon itching to get out of the bus.
Leon is known for being a colonial town with a bunch of decent museums to see. However, the only thing of note we did there was volcano boarding. The half day trip to the volcano was great. We started by carrying our sleds up to the top of the volcano (about 1 hour walk) before putting on our super fashionable orange protective overalls and goggles. A brief tutorial was given by the tour guide on how to actually ride on these things, before it was time to go over the edge. It felt as though we were merely passengers along for the ride as we zooming down the hill without any feeling of control, hoping not to hit a bump that would throw us off the sled. We had gravel in every nook and cranny after the ride but it was definitely worth it, a lot of fun, punctuated by a couple of drinks provided by the tour at the end for good measure.
