What hasn't already been said about New York? Truly multicultural, our impression is that it's a taste of the entire world in one place. Our accommodation was a hostel, just on the Brooklyn side of the Williamsburg bridge. We attempted to couch surf in but had no luck since there are few people willing to host, and those that do are generally inundated with requests.
Having good proximity to Manhattan we spent our time seeing the famous sights over two and a half days. It all lived up to its reputation as a bustling, energetic city with so much to keep a visitor occupied, including:
· A very strange, and somewhat disturbing street art performance in the East Village
· "The Highline", an abandoned stretch of elevated rail corridor in Manhattan converted into a garden walkway open to the public. It currently stretches for a number of blocks and they are continuing its conversion bit by bit. Surrounding it are new apartment buildings currently under construction which will probably become the new trendy area to live.
· Observing all of the "colourful characters" that walk the streets in amongst the super wealthy. New York certainly attracts all kinds of people and throws them into the same shared space.
· The new World Trade Centre building and the 9/11 Monument , a very impressive water feature that commemorates those who died in the terrorist attacks.
· The super crowded and energy sapping Times Square that seemed to be busy just for the sake of being busy
· The rubbish, homeless and filth hidden away in back streets and some of the less wealthy districts
We had a great time in New York, and managed to see almost every district of Manhattan during our stay. Manhattan is everything -the good and bad, the rich and poor, the glitz and filth, the overwhelmingly busy and the abandoned.
