Our last day in France, and oh, how we do love France! I'll call this last one the day of the tram. What a fabulous way to get around. Inexpensive, reliable, goes where you want to go, and the cost is affordable -- plus, the tram itself is up-to-date, CLEAN, and on time! What else could you ask for?? Can Atlanta do this??? I think not-- :-(
We trammed 20 minutes to just over the Rhine, across the France/German border, and then caught Bus 21 to Kiehl -- a whole 10 minutes later. We found ourselves in the middle of town center with shops, winstubs and my favorite -- a farmer's market! Beautiful vegetables! Fat orange carrots 12 inches long; roses; sunflowers; fresh ground herbs; and tomatoes we in the US call "heirloom" but, no time to indulge. We had just time enough to explore the town a bit, visit a beautiful church and park -- oh, the roses!!! Then, we enjoyed a lunch on the square consisting of Schwein Schnitzel, pommes fritz and German beer! (As a rule, I never eat this stuff, I'll probably die -- I can feel my arteries clogging already or maybe that's my waistline growing, but I loved it!!!) Sitting there, we met a couple -- married for 41 years, from Ireland who were doing a driving vacation through this area for a month in an RV -- yukk! They were quite nice and pleasant folk, though. Momentarily connecting with strangers is one of the many notable little true pleasures of life.
Afterwards we trammed back to Strasbourg and made sure we saw the important areas of the European Council and European Parliament.
Salade for dinner tonight! (hmmm, I think my waist line is still growing ...)
Off to Stuttgart tomorrow!
