Hello from Cairo...
Well my first day has been quite an experience to say the least! it's like nothing I've ever seen before. People walking in the middle of the road, cars literally everywhere and anywhere they can fit, people chasing you down the street shouting prices at you for their products, guys praying on the side of the road - I actually saw one guy praying with his eyes closed on the road walking towards really fast, heavy traffic! Not sure if he was meant to do that or if he had wandered off the pavement without realising! Aside from the craziness of it all, Cairo is amazing! The amount of stunning architecture and the history behind it all, the pyramids and sphinx of course, the yummy food, the smell of spices in the air and the sound of chants which is blasted through the city in the evening! amazing!
Getting here was fun, I had my own row of seats to stretch out, a tv and a lot of free wine! I put a film on and for the first ten minutes I was really confused, the people in the film were talking but all I could hear was music, I thought 'this is a strange film' and then I realised that I hadn't actually changed the headphone settings and had been listening to the classical music channel! Maybe that had something to do with the wine! As soon as I got off the plane I was surrounded by men (not as nice as that may sound) shouting 'taxi, taxi, you need a taxi pretty lady?' - If anyone ever goes to Cairo, make sure you get them
to write you a ticket before you get in the car! He tried to get me to pay way more than what he told me and when I said no I thought he was going to rip my head off! Got to the hostel which was lovely apart from the austrailian guy in the room next door that hocked up his flem every two minutes... gross!!
I had a tour with the guide from the hostel which was fun! Went to the pyramids first and I decided I would walk so that I could see things better - what a mistake!! I was hounded by men on camels and horses asking me if I wanted to hire one! The best offer I received though was this...
"Hey beautiful lady, would you like camel ride around the pyramids, I can show you best views and I'll give you good price! And when we've finished we have sexy time behind a pyramid uhh?!"
"Errr no thank you! I don't think my husband would be too happy with that!"
...and then quickly walked away with him shouting "ooh he's a lucky man" ha!
Had a really yummy lunch, went to a barbecue restaurant, where the guys played Egyptian folklore whilst I ate barbecued chicken, houmous and pitta bread... mmm! Next stop was the papyrus shop. I learnt how to make papyrus and got told stories of all the famous Egyptian paintings! Next door to that was a perfumery, so I learnt how to make perfume and got a rather questionable massage off the perfume guy! He wanted me to take my top and trousers off while he massaged the mint oil in for back pain! I told him I didnt have any back pain but he insisted! I didnt take my top or trousers off by the way... what a perv!
Met up with the girls staying in the hostel in the evening and the manager of the hostel, Peter, took us sightseeing! We seen a stunning park and from the highest point you could see the whole of Cairo! The park was beautiful!! After that we wandered through the night markets taking in everything! We sat outside a cafe for ages, eating falafel and drinking fresh orange juice, just people watching! All in all, such a good day! Cairo is a crazy but stunning city...
