We travelled to Paratay from Ubatuba which was a pretty drive with some of it being rain forest. Once in Paratay we got talking to some English girls who gave us some good advice regarding places to stay as the YHA that we had emailed never got back to us. In return Karl gave the girls some advice as what there is left to do in Christchurch which is their next stop. We got supplies for the next few days prior to heading to the Hostels that were on the beach front, both the hostels we went to were R$29 each per night and it included breakfast on the beach (how cool is that!). Considering that we had exhausted all our holiday spending money one and a half weeks short of our return home this was some welcome relief financially. We spent most of the rest of our day drinking on the beach and playing cards as there were bars setup along the beach front, when the bar we were at closed our hostel one opened and so we got a free 'welcome' drink.
The following day, thank god, we didn't have hangovers - well Karl isn't allowed to drink enough to actually get a hangover anymore so it wasn't going to happen to him anyway. We got up had breakfast on the beach and headed off to hire bikes for the day so we could visit some water falls. After the first hour Karl's bike seat and handlebars had broken! Karl was a grumpy little rascal indeed - much of the ride was uphill anyway and with the bikes having no readily available gear changing we had to walk in any case.
We finally reached the stop for the waterfalls we wanted to go to so we stopped had a drink locked up the bikes and headed along the track. We got to one called Tarzan first (Jane had earlier claimed these as her water falls, bad joke) but Tarzan was full of a school tour so we headed further down to the "slide". On the way down Karl, being ever so clever, though it would be easier to head lower through the flatter water area as he climbed down to one spot he was fine and told Jane she had picked the much harder route, then all of a sudden Karl let out a faint sound and slid all the way into the water trying ever so hard to keep his gear dry and above water! It was an hilarious sight and Jane was pleasantly safe on higher ground. Karl trying to get out of the slippery spot with his clothes as dry as possible was also funny as all the rocks surrounding him were very slippery, he managed to throw his clothes on a dry area and eventually managed to follow the path Jane had taken.
Having strung up Karls clothes to dry we then played around in the very cold pools until one of the locals showed us where to slide, and that was that, Karl was off not wanting to miss an opportunity for some fun. The waterfalls at this point are a fairly gentle slope, you can slide down the mossy rocks with the water into a big pool at the bottom. Once Jane had plucked up the courage she asked Karl to hold her glasses and guide her to the part we could slide from, while guiding Jane down, Karl slipped an then Jane slipped and fell pulling Karl down with her hurting Karls bottom which bruised later on and the camera which end up with quite a bump.
Karl then pushed Jane down for her first slide down. The slide is a single rock that is quite smooth and covered with slimy algae. Locals have learned to go down just on their feet! They call it surfing and even get a few jumps and tricks in. Being quite far away from a hospital it is ill advised that tourists do this as the risk of slipping over and cracking your head open is extremely high. Needless to say we both did it a few times, but only on our bottoms.
After we had finished we managed to find a local to fix most of Karls bike, enough for him to ride back down the hill with Jane. We then headed to find another waterfall however by the time we found the area it was getting late so after a quick change we headed back to base after dropping the bikes off and promptly headed to the bar for more drinks. We caught up with a french couple that we had got friendly with exchanged story's of the days activities and played cards and had some drinks with them prior to it starting to rain and us retiring for the night.
After eating breakfast the following morning we packed and were on our way in the drizzle to the bus station to head to Rio De Janeiro.
