So hit Rio last Friday at 5am and got picked up and whizzed to smart hotel on Copacabana Beach -~had one hour~s sleep and then up and off on city tour in the constant 30 degrees heat - went up Sugar Loaf mountain and also to see the huge Christ statute on the other side of the city and dressed up in one of the carnival outfits! Had huge traditional lunch on the tour which seems to consist of meat meat and more meat served to you at the table - they do like their meat down here. Another tour of the old city with an excellent dutch guide !!! and then on the plane to Natal on the north east coast - the closest point to Europe and Africa in South America - just on that bump on the map of Brazil!
Sadly Natal is rapidly becoming the Costa Del Sol of Brazil - there appears to be few planning laws and they are managing to ruin a beautiful coast line with big new hotels everywhere! The beaches vary from white to black - but most have the most amazing surf - so Calum and Dominic would be happy!
The community work is non-existant - they built a ramp for disabled access from a road to a hospital - and they just wanted me to come and sign my name in the cement! Not very interesting! So I am going a little stir crazy as they want me to be a beach and shop tourist - which is not up my street at all! Went on a day long beach buggy dune tour today - which could have been done in 3 hours and instead took 11 hours as we were taken from shop to shop and bar to bar - seriously commercial and naf! Off on a tour of some archelogical digs tomorrow in the interior for a few days - not much sign of community work there either!
Looking forward to the ride in Argentina - although the guide in Ecuador who has done the ride syas there are man eating horse flies - so I hope Eryl and Sarah bring the 100 per cent Deet with them to kill the BUxxxxs!
