Left Montreal this morning and drove the Chemin du Roy, along the St Lawrence Seaway, almost to Quebec and then turned north for 30 minutes to Duchesnay. A ski resort which is making the most of the Autumn colours. We are in the Auberge but there are lodges, chalets etc. Writing this before we go to eat.
Ottawa was lovely and we could have managed another night there. Walked in the morning too before leaving for Montreal. Security present at buildings but you are allowed to walk freely round Parliament Hill and around the Centennial Flame. Lovely buildings, big green areas and lots of museums we could have enjoyed, given more time.
Journey to Montreal was in pouring rain and quite unpleasant driving conditions. The rain really set in as we arrived and by the time we got back to the hotel having eaten, we were soaked and the brollie had blown inside out several times. New mac is waterproof - good test for it! Dried shoes with the hairdryer until it cut out! Rained all night. Next day was cloudy but gradually improved and we walked miles. Mont Royal, Art Gallery, Old Port, Old Town etc. Big suprise was how very very French it is. We liked the Frenchness but other Canadians are not too keen. City has not a lot to recommend it and doesn't push tourism.
Colours here are once again spectacular and we have wandered down to the lake. Peter has swum whilst I was catching up on internet. Shall spend tomorrow outdoors on the trails, bikes as well I am told, etc. Quebec on Monday for four nights - should be a real highlight according to all we have met!
Thanks for messages xx
